Summary

Premiere: June 21, 1978.

20/20 is an American television newsmagazine broadcast on ABC since June 6, 1978. Created by Roone Arledge, the show was designed similarly to CBS's 60 Minutes but focuses more on human interest topics than international and political topics. The show's first anchors were Harold Hayes and Robert Hughes. The first episode received poor reviews after airing a segment with puppets representing Jimmy Carter and Walter Cronkite. As a result, serious changes were made. Hugh Downs took on the role of host on the second episode after Hayes and Hughes were fired. Barbara Walters joined the cast in 1981 as something less than a co-anchor. In 1984 she became Hugh Downs' equal. This reunited a duo which had already anchored together on NBC's Today from 1964 - 1971.
