A Cinderella Story is about a girl Sam Montgomery (Hilary Duff) who is not at all popular at her high school. After her fathers death when she was 6, her evil stepmother Fiona inherited everything, because he didn't leave a will. Fiona treats Sam really bad and makes her work hard in her Dad's diner. At her school she is shunned by the popular stuck up girls like Shelby Cummings, a very wealthy, spoiled person. One ray of light in der life is her internet chat friend, whom she never met. Not knowing each others identity, they decide to meet at their school's Halloween dance at eleven o'clock. It's only then when Sam, dressed as Cinderella, realizes that her secret lover is none other than Austin Ames, Shelby's boyfriend and the most popular boy in school. Their time together is cut short when Sam has to race back to the diner, accidentally leaving her cell phone behind. After that, Austin tries to find the unknown Cinderella, while Sam is afraid that if he finds out, he may not want her anymore.
