58 years before Battlestar Galactica, an astonishing breakthrough is taking shape on the planet Caprica. The creator of a failing urban combat robot project tries to bring a virtual copy of his dead daughter into the real world, using a stolen processor, his combat chassis and her code. He thus creates the Cybernetic Life form Node or CYLON. The rapidly evolving spheres of human and mechanical engineering have collided, along with the fates of two families. Joined by tragedy in an explosive instant of terror, two rival clans led by powerful patriarchs, Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) and Daniel Greystone (Eric Stoltz) duel in an era of questionable ethics, corporate machinations and unbridled personal ambition as the final war for humanity looms.

More Information

Revolving around two families, the Adamas and the Graystones, the series will show the Twelve Colonies at peace and living in a society not unlike our own when a startling breakthrough in robotics brings to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with mechanical bodies. Joseph Adama - father of future Battlestar commander William Adama - a renowned civil liberties lawyer, becomes an opponent of the experiments wrought by the Graystones, owners of the computer giant trying to create these first living robots: the Cylons.

"The Graystones include father Daniel, a computer genius; mother Amanda, a brilliant surgeon and unfaithful wife; and their daughter, Zoe, who is martyred to her boyfriend's religious fanaticism - but not before she installs the rudimentary elements of her personality and DNA into a machine, creating a digital twin of herself, Zoe-A. After the human Zoe's death, Daniel uses these raw materials, some stolen technology and his own grief to cobble together 'a robotic version of his dead daughter.' This robot version, known as Zoe-R, is a Cylonic Eve, the first of her kind."

The same terrorist attack claimed the lives of Joseph Adama's wife and daughter, Tamara. Together with Daniel Graystone he works on bringing back their children, but is appalled at his partner's methods and ethics. However, as a result of this tragedy, he grows closer to his 9-year old son, William Adama.

Production Updates

On December 2, 2008, SciFi Channel officially announced that Caprica is picked up for a 20 episode first season. According to the press release, production is slated to begin in the summer of 2009 and the series is expected to begin airing in 2010. The reason for the delay is attributed to the fact that they are attempting to regroup the core staff that worked on the pilot and Battlestar Galactica, as these persons have since found work on other projects.
