Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, joined the group of interns at Seattle Grace in Season 1 of Grey's Anatomy. She is an overachiever, jumps at any chance to show off her knowledge or get in on a surgery, and sees tragic accidents as "cool" and great opportunities to do surgery. Though she's closed off to most people, she becomes very close to Meredith Grey and to the other interns as well, though Meredith becomes her main and most trusted confidant. She became involved with attendee Dr. Preston Burke and was wary to truly commit, but went from a reluctant girlfriend to a reluctant live-in girlfriend, to an uncertain fiancé. While she was in love with Burke, throughout the first three seasons of Grey's Anatomy, she felt she always had to be someone different from herself to please him in their relationship.

In the finale of Season 3, she passed her intern exam making her a doctor, and she was supposed to become a wife as well with her and Burke's wedding planned and everything ready to go. As she hesitated before walking down the aisle, Burke came to check on her and instead of her bailing on the wedding as could've been expected, instead Burke said it wasn't right and he left, calling off the wedding.

When Cristina returned to their apartment still in her wedding dress, she saw the things most important to him were gone. She cried and said she was free though showing both regret and joy in this freedom. The fate of their relationship is uncertain, but most likely truly over since actor Isaiah Washington who plays Burke has been fired from the show without much hope of returning.
