'Dancing With the Stars': Shawn Johnson says 'offbeat' routines 'mentally shut everybody down'

The "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" semi-finalists were definitely assigned some "offbeat" routines this week -- but the most bizarre was probably Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough's "Knight Rider" bhangra. They earned a perfect 30 score from the judges for their almost indescribable performance, which Shawn told us backstage only came together at the very last minute. "This has been the week from hell," she said, "I think for the entire cast." "We were thrown stuff we weren't used to," added the Season 8 champ about the offbeat routines. "At the semifinal, you really want to take this week to show the world what you're capable of, and when you're given a 'Knight Rider' bhangra, that kind of limits you to what your abilities are. And mentally it shut everybody down." "As of two days ago we didn't have an Argentine tango [their second routine] or a bhangra," Shawn laughed. "So we kind of threw...

'Dancing With the Stars' backstage: Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy on 'irresponsible' judges, the Speedo and that kiss

In what might be the strangest semifinal week "Dancing With the Stars" history, the five remaining All-Stars were tasked with performing both an "offbeat" routine and a tribute to Michael Jackson's "Bad." Kelly Monaco and her pro partner, Val Chmerkovskiy provided two of the night's most memorable moments: a passionate kiss at the end of their rumba and Val stripping down to a Speedo and splashing in the water for their "surfer flamenco" routine. Unfortunately, the pair were not rewarded by the judges, who gave them the night's lowest score (25.5) for their offbeat entry. When we caught up with Kelly and Val backstage after the show, our first question was about that kiss --which will undoubtedly fuel more rumors of a show-mance between the sultry couple. Was it spontaneous? "No, it was planned," Kelly told us. "It was part of the choreography." When a reporter jokingly asked how long they rehearsed the kiss, Val...

DWTS All-Stars: Val and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Fight Back Against Low Judges’ Scores

Watching Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy’s “Surfer” Flamenco on the Dancing With the Stars All-Stars Semifinals Performance Show, we thought high scores were coming. It was sharp, fast, sexy, fun, and actually seemed to fit its insane theme. The Speedo was a bonus!   But then the judges decided it didn’t have enough Flamenco, saying it was mostly a Paso Doble. Since they had decided Emmitt Smith didn’t have enough Lindy Hop and still gave him...

‘Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars’: The Final Five Dance to Michael Jackson

ABC/ADAM TAYLOR Tom Bergeron, Brooke Burke-Charvet on "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars." Yeah, we know Michael Jackson is "Bad." But what will the quality of the dances done to his music this week be? And how “bad” are such things as “surfer flamenco” and “big-top jazz?”

'Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars': Maria Menounos 'would totally do' another season

Maria Menounos may not be competing again in the "All-Stars" round of "Dancing With the Stars," but she's still very invested in it.The co-host of the syndicated entertainment-news program "Extra" lasted well into Season 14 of the ABC competition, placing fourth with partner Derek Hough. He's now teamed with Olympic-gold-medal gymnast Shawn Johnson as "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" nears its Tuesday, Nov. 27, finale ... and Menounos is rooting for them to win, though she tells Zap2it all the personalities llnked to the series are "a family."I have so little time, it's amazing to me that I've been following the show. I'll be watching it at midnight, that's how crazy I am to catch it. And I'll be texting Derek and Shawn in the middle of the night saying, 'That was amazing!' And that was me last season. It's so surreal to know I did that. I'm not skilled in that, and they made...

'Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars' Elimination: Why Did Gilles Marini Go Home?

It wasn't supposed to happen this way. After narrowly missing out on winning Dancing with the Stars in his original season, Gilles Marini was supposed to return triumphant to the ballroom. Instead, he landed in sixth place after his elimination in week 8 of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars . So why did that happen?

'Dancing With the Stars' eliminee: 'It was a great run'

No matter which two couples were sent home on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" tonight (Nov. 13), it was going to hurt. But Kirstie Alley, who got the boot tonight with Gilles Marini, took the news with charm and humor. "I'm so glad I did it -- it was a great run," the actress told us backstage after the show with pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. "Maks tried his hardest, but come on! The bottom line is there are extraordinary dancers here."The first time we did the show everyone was a little even, [but] from the time I saw this cast, I was slightly flipping out -- and rightfully so." But what the 61-year-old comedian lacked in technical skill she more than compensated in entertainment, including her rapid-fire repartee with Maks. She ascribes her partner's atypical even temper this season to "horse tranquilizers -- the human ones didn't really work" and says "gas pains" are to...
