Misaki and Genma meet at the abandoned National Observatory, the former being warned that communications between her and the rest of the world are being tapped by the MIAC. Hei and the others escape from Sapporo under a heavy police lockdown by seeking assistance from the underworld. However, Hei is later duped when their contact gets away with kidnapping July. A Russian agent named Ilya Sokolov encounters Suō and uses his Contractor powers to help him detain her, Mao and July after killing their contact. Hei later comes to their rescue and kills Ilya, despite nearly being overpowered by Ilya's powers. The four later were able to arrive at the Sendai Shinkansen station, boarding it while Repnin of the FSB watches them from his cabin.

Darker than Black premiered across Japan from April 5, 2007 on MBS, TBS, and its affiliated broadcast stations, with its satellite television premiere in Japan on Animax in May 2007. Created, directed and written by Tensai Okamura, the music for the series is composed by Yoko Kanno. The anime has been released in North America by Funimation, while its sequel work, Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini is currently being streamed online by Crunchyroll.

The show is as dark as its name suggests - graphic at times in its violence, and gloomy in theme and subject matter. The world is as much the main character as Hei is, with its many shadows hiding dozens of conspiracies all working at cross purposes and causing tragedy after tragedy. The Contractors who populate Darker than Black are heartless and calculating monsters, and they suck you into a world full of mystery and murder.
