Early life

Bader was born in Alexandria, Virginia, the son of Gretta, a sculptor, and William Bader, a foundation executive who worked in politics.[1] At the age of two, his family moved to Paris, France, but he returned to the U.S. to attend Groveton High School; graduated from T.C. Williams High School in (Alexandria, Virginia) and later college at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Bader is married to actress Dulcy Rogers with whom he has one child.

Career

After a few guest roles on popular television series such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Quantum Leap and Cheers, Bader's first major role was in the 1993 series Danger Theatre, playing The Searcher. He moved into cinema acting for the 1993 movie version of The Beverly Hillbillies, but returned to TV, playing Oswald on The Drew Carey Show starting in 1995.

Having a deep and easily-recognizable voice, Bader is a natural choice for a voice actor and has had roles in such animated features as Ice Age, The Simpsons, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. He appeared in the 1999 film Office Space as Peter's mulleted neighbor Lawrence, and in the 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite as Rex, the owner of a martial arts dojo. He was also in the 2004 film Eurotrip as a thief. All of these roles had Bader altering his appearance in some way so as to be less recognizable. He appeared in an episode of 7th Heaven as the character portrayed by Colton James, T-Bone's father in 2007. He also recently appeared on the TV legal drama Shark, surprisingly in the same episode as his former on-screen wife from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Charlayne Woodard, who played Janice Smith in the 90's sitcom. He also appeared in the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm titled "The TiVo Guy."

One of his most popular movies yet is the animated Surf's Up, when he plays Tank "The Shredder" Evans. Tank is a macho, yet slightly dim-witted popular surfer. He loves his 9 trophies so much that he gives them names such as "Jill", "Amy", and "Suzy".

Bader has the honor of lending his voice to four different Batman cartoons as both heroes and villains: Batman Beyond, The Zeta Project, The Batman, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In the last one he voices The Dark Knight himself.

Trivia

Diedrich Bader was born in Alexandria, Virginia, but moved to Paris, France, with his family at age two. While in the "city of light," he developed an appreciation for movie legends like Fred Astaire and Charles Chaplin. So, when a fragile "Chaplin" movie reel burned in the theater's projector, four-year-old Bader hopped on stage and entertained the crowd with an imitation of the "Little Tramp." The standing ovation he received set the course for the rest of his life -- he knew he wanted to perform. He returned to the United States for high school and attended North Carolina School of the Arts. During spring break, he was discovered by a casting director in Santa Fe, New Mexico. That meeting led to an audition for a small role in a pilot. Bader landed a starring role, instead. Although the pilot wasn't picked up, Bader moved to Los Angeles and began auditioning for other roles. He landed guest spots on several series, including: "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987), "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" (1990), "Cheers" (1982), and "Quantum Leap" (1989). Filmmaker Penelope Spheeris liked his tongue-in-cheek delivery when he read for her action-adventure spoof series, "Danger Theatre" (1993). She hired him in that role and for the feature film, The Beverly Hillbillies (1993), which she directed. Bader played the dual roles of twins Jethro and Jethrine. Bader also filmed the political thriller, The Assassination File (1996) (TV), for the Encore Entertainment Group. Bader was excited to work on the project as it allowed him to be shot in the head -- a first for the actor. Bader's father, William, was Chief of Staff for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is president of the Eurasia Foundation on Capitol Hill. His mother, Gretta, is a sculptor artist whose portrait of the late Senator William Fulbright sits in the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Bader recently wed actress Dulcy Rogers; they reside in Los Angeles.
