Pauline received an envelope containing money from Mark. It had no return address or message but she knew it was from him somehow and it was postmarked Southend. She called out to Arthur who was upstairs that they should get the next train there. They knew that Lou would not be able to make the trip so they concocted a story that they were going to visit Arthur's Auntie Betty in Leigh-on-sea. Arthur slipped a piccy of Mark into his pocket before they left and Pauline took a piccy of Martin to show Mark. Lou had never liked "Auntie Betty" and when Arthur said she was ill, Lou said she'd always been ill. That night Lou was holding Martin and went to get the piccy of Mark to show him. She wondered what was up when the found the frame empty.
