The competitions are usually MC'd by chef Keegan Gerhard and judged by various chefs who specialize in the focusing on that particular week. Contestants are given a certain length of time to complete a task, usually with qualifiers (cake competitions often have a height requirement). Episodes are shot in front of a live audience, and often at a tourist attraction, such as the Mall of America or Disneyworld. Depending on the discipline and scope of the competition, the number of competitors range from 3 to hundreds. Occasionally, regional competitions are held to determine the competitors each week. Some of the events are also held as world championships or as invitationals.

The winner usually receives a check for $10,000 and a gold medal. In episodes with five or more competitors, silver and bronze medals may be awarded.
