Plot
The events of the series take place in 1998 and are set in Scotland, centred on a NATO airforce base. While on routine patrol one night, a pilot detects an unknown aircraft plunging towards the ground. It crashes in the Scottish Highlands, and its occupant, a human being, scurries away from the site before being picked up by troops from the base.
At the base, the occupant relates his story. He had been an officer in the British Army during the Second World War, attached to a bomb disposal squad in London. One night, during the Blitz, he and his team had been sent to investigate a craft which had crashed in London, apparently a German bomber shot down during an air raid. The investigation team realises, though, that the craft is not an aeroplane, and cannot explain its origins. Nor can they account for the surviving occupant, a grey-skinned pilot which does not fully resemble a human. The pilot is shut away in a mental hospital, far from prying eyes, where the officer and a nurse learn to communicate with it, and discover its origins. Far from being a German pilot in an experimental aircraft, the pilot is in fact an alien creature, from a civilisation it refers to as "The Echoes", and that its craft had been accidentally shot down while watching an air raid over London. Dying from an unknown disease, the creature relates to the officer that other craft will eventually come looking for him, but despite the efforts of the officer and the nurse, the creature dies from its strange illness in the winter of 1940. Determined to make contact with the beings, the officer spends nights burning an Echo symbol into the grass of the hospital's gardens, until one day, he disappears.
Back on the NATO base, the pilot informs the base commanders that he has spent the last fifty years living on the Echo homeworld, and provides some information on their society. He explains that the Echoes are a largely peaceful civilisation possessing high technology, that they have made contact with two or three other advanced spacefaring civilisations, and regularly survey other, less advanced societies in the region. When asked why he has returned to Earth, the pilot explains that Echo society has almost disappeared, destroyed in a war against a trans-dimensional race called the "nDs". The nDs, he explains, are a race of farmers, who use organic technology to open portals in space-time, which they then use to kidnap alien beings and assimilate their organic chemistry into their own civilisation. The nDs, he explains, have all but wiped out the Echoes, and that only a handful of Echoes have survived, fleeing in small spaceships to primitive, out-of-the-way planets which the nDs have not discovered. However, the nDs are able to track the spacecraft, and have subsequently learned of Earth's existence.
The series follows the efforts of the NATO personnel and a group of scientists as they come into contact with the nDs, which open portals onto the base and randomly kidnap soldiers and civilians from the base, taking them to an unknown, inter-dimensional location where the kidnapped humans are subjected to extremely painful testing before the nDs return them to the base. As the series continues, the nDs start to keep the people they capture, whose fate is never discovered. A plague of alien origins breaks out in the local town, and captured by soldiers wreaks havoc on the base, and in the finale, the nDs open a massive portal in Scotland, NATO prepares to fire nuclear missiles at Scotland to destroy whatever comes through the opening, and the nDs begin their invasion of Earth.
