Izzie Stevens, played by Katherine Heigl, joined the interns at Seattle Grace in Season 1 of Grey's Anatomy. She is a beautiful, positive-thinking blond, so the entire opposite of fellow intern Cristina Yang! She loves to bake and bakes hoards of muffins, etc. whenever she's stressed or upset. She lives with Meredith Grey in Meredith's mother's house along with George O'Malley though he moved out in Season 3 after getting married to Callie Torres-O'Malley.

She has a brief fling with another intern, Alex Karev whom all the other interns originally find to be a cocky jerk, but she discovers to have a much softer side as well. In the midst of this, she meets transplant patient Denny Duquette who is waiting for a heart transplant. Despite the rules against relationship with patients, Izzie and Denny fall in love. In the final episodes of Season 2, Izzie fights hard for a heart which leads to a very dangerous decision to cut his wire which means stopping his heart temporarily to force his body to give desperate enough test results for him to get bumped up to first in line for the heart. As Izzie goes to do this, Denny proposes to Izzie.

There is much more drama as Dr. Preston Burke comes back to Seattle Grace to check on Denny's condition, but gets shot in the hospital parking lot. So, while Izzie thinks the heart is on the way to save Denny, Burke is out of commission to help with Denny as he himself is checked in to the hospital.

Denny does end up getting a heart, but tragically, as Izzie is very happily on her way to see Denny before the hospital throws a prom for the Chief's dying niece, Denny's heart gives out and he dies, leaving Izzie entirely heartbroken. She also immediately quits and leaves the hospital.

She spends much of Season 3 mending from the heartbreak and working through the issues she caused by cutting the wire. She ends up returning to Seattle Grace and completing her internship. She has many more ups and downs throughout the season with her friendships, especially her friendship with George which gets complicated when they sleep together after a night of drinking because of a fight George has with Callie. They never quite resolve things as George planned to leave Seattle Grace for another hospital, but ends up not passing his intern exam. It looks as if he will chose to stay with Callie, but Season 4 should have plenty more drama in store for Izzie and George.
