Jeffrey Combs was born on September 9th, 1954 in Oxnard, California. He grew up in Lompoc, California with a plethora of siblings both older and younger. He attended the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, and the Professional Actor's Training Program at the University of Washington in Seattle. He spent several years in regional theater performing at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, the Arizona Theatre Company in Tucson, the California Shakespearean Festival, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and the South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa among others. In 1984, he won the prestigious Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle award for his portrayal of Christy Mahon in "Playboy of the Western World."

As a horror film leading actor, Combs is probably best known for portraying Herbert West in the cult horror film Re-Animator (1985) based upon the serialized tales by H.P. Lovecraft and brought to the screen by director Stuart Gordon and producer Brian Yuzna. Combs stayed in the realm of cult films with both Gordon and Yuzna and went on to star in several other Lovecraft adaptations, including From Beyond (1986), Bride of Re-Animator (1990), Castle Freak (1995), and Necronomicon-Book of the Dead (1993), in which he portrayed Lovecraft himself. Recently, Combs played another iconic horror writer, Edgar Allen Poe to great acclaim in the Masters of Horror episode, "The Black Cat" (2007).

Jeffrey is also known to Star Trek fans in many incarnations, including the devious Vorta Weyoun, the pesky Ferengi Brunt, and the gruff, but lovable Andorian Shran. Sci-fi lovers may also recognize him as the quirky Dr. Kevin Burkhoff from the popular series, The 4400 and Harriman Gray on Babylon 5.

A diverse and talented actor, Combs' other roles include the off-kilter Agent Milton Dammers in Peter Jackson's The Frighteners, the wiry hitman Dinosaur Bob in Love and a .45, and Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt in William Malone's remake of the William Castle thriller, House on Haunted Hill (1999). More recently, Jeff has starred as a Film Noir detective in Parasomnia (2008) and a bumbling neighbor in the upcoming thriller, Urgency scheduled for release in early 2009.

Combs has also lent his voice talents to various cartoons, including Batman, Spiderman, and a recurring role as The Question on Justice League Unlimited. Most recently, Jeff starred in a voice adaptation of the graphic novel, The Night Driver.
