The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of April 25, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   Mike & Molly (Midseason Premiere) Monday at 8:00 p.m. on CBS Why: Praise Moonves! Melissa McCarthy's long nightmare is finally over; the A-list film star is free to make Tammy 2 . (But please don't.) OK, I'm sure McCarthy really enjoyed her six years anchoring CBS' benign comedy. Working with James Burrows is a TV actor's dream; her chemistry with Billy Gardell, despite occasional rumors about jealousy, was fun and sweet; the supporting cast was strong; she won an Emmy! But it's time. For some reason, CBS has not treated Mike & Molly like a network priority. Although it's been a remarkably consistent ratings performer since its debut in 2010, this year was the third in a row that the network opted to keep the show off its initial fall schedule. (After two years of late-fall debuts, this year's premiere was pushed to January, then it was off the air for nine weeks before this midseason relaunch.) But leave all the behind-the-scenes drama, well, behind, because this episode is about a puppy. A puppy! Prepare to talk about: That puppy, tho; whether this show will produce a Melissa McCarthy (a supporting TV player who goes on to dominate screens both big and small).   Lucifer (Season Finale) Monday at 9:00 p.m. on FOX Why: Somewhat under the radar, Lucifer is one of this year's most enjoyable new shows, and it's been getting better. Always fun in the can't-believe-I'm-watching-this sort of way, the series, in recent weeks, has created some legitimately dramatic moments and clever quips: "Aren't you supposed to be blonde?" was a great nod to the source material. In last week's episode , the weak procedural element improved big time with a case tied directly to Lucifer. And Tom Ellis delivered. To be fair, he has pretty much all season. Firing off quips like a boss, oozing charm and confidence, he owns this role. And in the lead-up to this finale, he has upped his game. Bring on Season 2. Prepare to talk about: That "pretty shocking" final scene, per Ellis; how meh Dr. Martin is, even though Rachael Harris is fantastic.   Keeping Up with the Kardashians (Season Premiere) Sunday at 9 p.m. on E! Why: Look, no one is arguing that this is brain food. But there's a place on TV for silly, semi-scripted "reality." And the Kardashian klan has found that place, renovated it, torn it down for funsies, and rebuilt an even gaudier version. Over the course of 12 seasons — for nearly a decade — this family has wrung out enough drama to produce 160 episodes of fairly entertaining television. You've got Queen Khloé making the lessers shiver with her devastating shade, Kim ugly-crying her ever-thicker makeup off, and Kourtney giving precisely zero f**ks about anything. But there's fascinating drama, too: Lamar, Rob, Caitlyn, KANYE. I mean… it's nuts. All of it. And that makes for compelling TV. But there's one thing that really stands out above all that stuff. Strip away the profanity and sex and you're left with a pretty wholesome show. After all, this is all about a large, complicated, dysfunctional, loving family coming together no matter how large the obstacle or crazy the circumstances. So don't hate; appreciate. Prepare to talk about: Kim's new baby; Kourtney's babydaddy drama; Kylie's baby makeup empire.   T.J. DeGroat is the editor of SideReel. He's worried about Rob. 5 Reasons We Love Watching: 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians'

Yup, the Kardashians are still a thing — a big one. Despite wringing every ounce of drama out of their lives for nearly a decade, there are plenty of semi-scripted moments still to share as the show heads into its 12th (!) season. There's Khloé's neverending Lamar nightmare, Kim's neverending housing nightmare, and Kourtney's neverending babydaddy nightmare. And don't forget the Jenner girls: Kendall continues to dominate the new Instagram-sponsored modeling world as Kylie pouts her way to the top of a makeup empire. But wait, there's more! Not seen on camera for several seasons, Rob still manages to pull focus with his increasingly bizarre personal life. And of course, there's Kris and Cait, the new poster couple for the modern, nontraditional extended family. If that doesn't sell you, here are five reasons to check out Keeping Up with the Kardashians , Sundays at 9:00 p.m. on E! 5. Everyone's favorite, Khloé, keeps it real AF. Or at least as real as it gets on a semi-scripted E! show.         4. Like all kids, the girls treat their mom(ager) like garbage, mercilessly making fun of her for being too boring or too wild, too controlling or too checked out.         3. Three words: Kim's ugly cry.         2. The ladies can be harsh as hell. It leads to some ugly situations for them to work through, which is television gold.         1. But at the end of the day, this is really a show about a family getting into it and getting through it. Seriously, peel away all the nonsense and the easy-to-mock grandiosity and, at its heart, this is a show about an actual family whose members, by blood and by choice, clearly love each other. Each episode is full of empathy and humor. Kardashian family values, it turns out, are pretty traditional.           Note: Hating the Kardashians is so basic. Be better than that. div.reason h3 { clear: both; padding-top: 30px; } div.reason img { float: left; width: 400px; } div.reason img.grid { float: left; width: 315px; } div.reason p { clear: both; }
