Season 3, Episode 4 - "Counter Culture Blues"
12 April, 2009
An ageing pop star causes complaints when he fires off his hunting rifle and disturbes the local Sunday service. When he goes to caution him, Lewis is shocked to encounter Esme Ford, a rock singer he had once admired, and who was believed to have drowned years ago. The body of a teenage boy, who has been repeatedly run over by a vehicle, points to a connection with members of Esme's old band.

What do you think makes Lewis such an enduring success?
Everywhere I go, people talk about the production values of Lewis. Punters notice it, theyââ¬â¢re not stupid. I love the space in Oxford and the use of the city. It makes a huge difference,...

- Inspector Robert Lewis, former sidekick to the his mentor, legendary Inspector Endeavour Morse, has been on a lengthy assignment in the British Virgin Islands. Now he's back with the Thames Valley Police in the familiar territory of the English university city of Oxford -- five years after the death of his long-time police partner. Newly widowed, he now returns to Oxford and soon finds himself in charge of his own murder case. Meanwhile, Lewis new boss, Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent, has plans to move him off the front lines to a training assignment, which he is determined to resist. The well-known scholar element (that Morse so famously represented) is upheld by the new DS, a Jamaes Hathaway (Fox), that suspended his education as a priest. But it is notes that Morse made on an earlier case which help Lewis solve his first case.
A gripping detective drama featuring echoes of the past...
Trivia
- The 4th season is filmed during summer 2009
- On many sites the Pilot is not recognised as a part of Season 1, thereby only rendering it a 3 episode stint. On Sidereel, however, we have included it.
- In "Inspector Morse" (1987), Morse and Lewis worked for the Thames Valley Police - the actual police force that is responsible for this part of the country. However in "Lewis" (2007), Lewis and Hathaway work for the fictitious Oxfordshire Police Force because the producers were not allowed to use the name, uniforms, or emblems of Thames Valley Police and could not film at St Aldate's Police Station. It is thought that this is due either to Home Office security restrictions in connection with the Iraq war or because of a lack of cooperation by a newly appointed Chief Constable.
- It was intended that Chief Supt Strange played by James Grout would appear, either as the superintendent or at least in a transitional scene in a nursing home after his retirement, but Grout was too ill to work so the character of Strange was written out and Supt Innocent was created instead.
- The title of the pilot, as shown on scripts and call-sheets, was Reputation. However this episode title was not displayed on any credits or in any listings magazines or publicity material.
- In the pilot, when Jessica Pollock is playing the trumpet, the music scholarship is funded by the Endeavour Award provided by an anonymous bequest. The secretary tells Lewis that the only stipulation the benefactor made was that the winner must "give solace to the soul with their playing". It is obvious that the benefactor was none other than Morse.
- In the pilot, just after Hathaway collects Lewis at the airport, they are nearly run over by a burgundy Jaguar very similar to the one that Morse used to drive, causing Lewis to think for a second that he is seeing a ghost. This is just one of the many references in this episode to Morse's influence on Lewis.
