Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is a young and talented poker player hindered by his personal demons. Living in Las Vegas from poker game to poker game, he wants a shot at the World Championship. He meets a struggling singer named Billie Offer (Drew Barrymore) to whom he is attracted. As she grows to care for him, she becomes determined to help him resolve his problems. Ultimately, Huck must tackle his fears all at once as he heads for a poker showdown with his estranged father L.C. (Robert Duvall) at the World Series of Poker.
