The shop is co-owned by tattoo artists Ami James and Chris Nuñez, and also features artists Chris Garver, Darren Brass and Yoji Harada. California artist Kat Von D joined the shop during the first season while Brass had an injured arm. At the end of season two, however, Kat left the show after a series of escalating personal differences with Ami James. She is slated to appear in her own Miami Ink spinoff entitled LA Ink. Each episode features a number of customers along with their backstories and motivations for choosing their tattoos. There is also some focus on the personal lives of the artists.
