Mr. Divisadero and the Party Boy Lifestyle November 10 at Hotel Utah

Mr. Divisadero was a one-time San Francisco band that ended up seeing its four members split off in classic turn-of-the-millennium white dude diaspora (the four members now live separately in Portland, San Francisco, LA, and Brooklyn). Back in town for one night during a West Coast tour, they played a packed Hotel Utah for a crowd showing bunches of love (full disclosure: I briefly worked with the guitar player, peddling tickets for the San Francisco Symphony). The band puts out a brand of oddly charming keyboard-heavy pop, flitting from genre to genre from B-52s-ish spastic surf jams to absurdly romantic Queen-esque ballads, before breaking into proggy sea shanties about fishermen running heroin off the Atlantic seaboard. Closing with their shoulda-been radio hit Love in the 21st Century, there were no crossed arms in the crowd, just smiles and sing-alongs. - Jake Swearingen Link to Article
