In Defense of Sarah Braverman Over Lorelai Gilmore

When I first discovered Gilmore Girls , it was a revelation. I had found the show. The show that would be the marker for all other shows to come. The ultimate series of the 21st Century. And I think all other die-hard fans of the show would agree with me on this. Now, having professed my undying love for all things Gilmore Girls , I want to offer up a contrarian viewpoint regarding Lauren Graham’s two most famous characters. In some ways Sarah Braverman (her Parenthood character) and Lorelai Gilmore are very similar. They're both mothers, they're both free spirits, they're both separated from the fathers of their children and have turbulent love lives. But that’s where the similarities end. What was great about Gilmore Girls , as well as the actual Gilmore girls, was everything that made it un-lifelike. Rory and Lorelai gorge on junk food, never exercise, and still remain maddeningly skinny. Besides their huge blowout nearing the end of the series, the Gilmore duo never ever fight and have the most frustratingly amazing mother-daughter relationship to have ever graced this Earth. Every single boy the ladies encounter loves Lorelai and Rory. Every. Single. One. Lorelai is charming, funny, pretty, ambitious, hard working, loving, and every other positive adjective in the English language. BUT, after a point, you start to secretly hate her and Rory for all of this. Okay, maybe not. But, when I ate only junk food as dinner for a month and—surprise, surprise— didn’t lose weight, I knew that while I endlessly looked up to the two Gilmores, they just weren’t representative of real life. Now, Sarah Braverman, on the other hand, is perfectly imperfect. She makes endless mistakes. She goes for the wrong guy over, and over. She makes bad parenting decisions. She is vulnerable, and oh-so-human. And I love her for it. Unlike with Lorelai Gilmore, I can see myself in Sarah Braverman. I can laugh and smile alongside her, but also commiserate with her, when the time calls for it. She ends up getting the guy, and having a strong connection with her children, but it takes all six seasons and multiple stumbles along the way, to get to that place. And just as it should. Lorelai Gilmore is the person we all wish we were (or wish was our mother). But Sarah Braverman is the person we actually are, and we should love her all the more for it, faults and all.
