Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) has completely shut himself off from the outside world after the loss of his family. By chance, Charlie is reunited with his old college roommate, Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) after Alan spots him riding along on his Go-Ped (goped) on a busy Manhattan street. Throughout the film Alan finds himself, not only rekindling his friendship and helping Charlie rediscover his own life, Alan also finds himself questioning the life he leads. Although never been treated for his post traumatic stress disorder, Charlie continues to live his life the way he sees fit without having to remember his past. The only person he trusts is Alan, but even then, he pushes him away because the loss of his family is too unbearable to consciously deal with.
