Reprise Review, by Michael Sragow of Baltimore Sun
Reprise, the first film from Norwegian director Joachim Trier (who also co-wrote the script with Eskil Vogt), is a serious spree: a bittersweet yet also romping reverie about the way that people become artists in the new millennium.

More Information
Reprise is a playful film about friendship, madness and creativity, love and sorrow, great ambitions, and the unpleasant discrepancy between hope and reality. With its distinct narrative structure, where recordings are done in black and white using hand-held cameras, playful montages and voice-overs are put to use. The film can partly be taken as an homage to Francois Truffaut and the French nouvelle vague. The two 23-year olds Erik and Phillip are dreaming of becoming successful writers. When they both try to get a manuscript published, Erik's is rejected. Phillip, on the other hand, gets his manuscript accepted and overnight he goes on to become a star of the Norwegian literary scene. He also meets Kari, who he falls in love with. Six months later, Erik and his friends pick up Phillip at a psychiatric hospital to bring him home after a long treatment. Erik still hasn't given up his dream, but Phillip isn't able to write anymore, although his friend encourages him to make a new effort. Instead he tries to get his ruined relationship with Kari to start from the beginning again. REPRISE explores not just what happens to Phillip and Erik as they pick up the pieces but what might have happened to them, what they imagine could happen, what they fear will possibly happen and what they cant see actually happening. Nimbly moving both backwards and forwards in time via a dazzling mix of flashbacks, rapid-fire editing, philosophical voiceovers and comical flights of fancy -- the film traces how Erik and Phillip arrived at this precipice where exuberant youth runs into the harsh light of day . . . and witnesses the emotionally gripping aftermath. REPRISE marks the feature film debut of Joachim Trier, who wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt. In its native Norway, the film won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the national film awards. REPRISEs unusual cast includes Anders Danielsen Lie, a doctor and musician, as the romantically enigmatic Philip and advertising copywriter Espen Klouman Hoiner, as the sly and charismatic Erik. Newcomer Viktoria Winge is Kari, Phillips girlfriend and muse, with whom he tries, over and over, to recreate the elusive source of his inspiration. The film is produced by Karin Julsrud and executive produced by Scott Rudin.
