Fashion designer Ava lives in Playa Linda, a California beach town (a lot of which is filmed in the real city Hermosa Beach, California) with her three best friends: her former boyfriend Johnny, Australian surf shop owner Jay, and her business partner Susannah. Their life, it seems, is perfect.

Then, Ava's sister and brother-in-law are killed in an accident, and their three children must make the move from rural Kansas, to Ava's home.

Seventeen-year-old Bradin has his own adolescent angst to deal with (in season one he has to deal with his wild girlfriend Sarah (Sara Paxton) after having lost his virginity to her), but he does his best to help his younger siblings. Thirteen-year-old Nikki has always adored her aunt but sometimes resents Ava's attempts to fill her late mother's shoes (in season 2 she has to deal with her, her boyfriend and his abusive father). Nine-year-old Derrick has enough on his hands just trying to understand the big issues of life, death and family.

Ava ends up turning to her friends for help in raising her new surrogate children: Susannah's level-headedness, Johnny's abilities as a father figure, and Jay's boyishness. And while Nikki begins puberty, and Derrick deals with the big changes in his life, Bradin is discovering sex and women - particularly in Callie a girl from the same town as him in Kansas.

In season 2 Ava begins a relationship with Nikki's principal, Dr. Simon O'Keefe. They eventually got engaged and nearly married, until Nikki spoke up about Ava not loving Simon at the rehearsal dinner and everybody decides to deal with their anger differently. Ava talks to Nikki, Johnny "cleans up" with Mona and Bradin sleeps with Callie. Derrick also has a rough time accepting what happened, and basically shuns his aunt and sister. In the back of his mind, he still believes that somehow Ava and Simon will reunite, Though this idea leaves his head after Ava finds drugs in Braiden's jeans.

With all of that going on, Nikki is faced with being the most hated girl in Derrick's eyes, something that she never thought would happen. Bradin faces a dilemma with his new girlfriend [Callie]. Unfortunately Ava ends up walking in on them having sex, making Callie run off in embarrassment. But while having dinner with Jay's ex-girlfriend Erika it seems there is some intense feelings going on. Johnny has had some luck of his own with his his working partner Mona as them two get together. So Derrick was very happy when Simon came over to help him with his astronomy project while Ava looked over crying at the story Simon told Derrick.
