Survivor: China will be the fifteenth season of the reality television series Survivor. Applications were due on January 30, 2007. Around March 2007, about 800 applicants were selected for an interview by CBS. Out of those 800, about 48 semi-finalists were selected to go to Los Angeles sometime during April-May 2007 for an additional round of interviews. From these semi-finalists, about 16 were selected to participate in the show between June and August 2007. The show was announced at the end of the live reunion show for Survivor: Fiji on May 13, 2007. Jeff Probst claimed that this was the first full American television series to be filmed entirely within China. The show will have "unprecedented access" to several historical Chinese monuments, including the Shaolin Temple and the Great Wall of China. In an interview, Mark Burnett stated that "We got rid of exile island," and that "We still have a hidden immunity idol but it is right under their noses."

CBS announced that the show will air in this fall (later confirmed by the official web site to be September 20, 2007) on Thursdays at 8PM Eastern, the same time slot as the previous season. The contestants and their original tribes were announced on August 20, 2007. It was also revealed that each contestant would get a copy of The Art of War by Sun Tzu, as stated by Jeff Probst, "Survivor is a war" and "The book deals with leadership and how you defeat the other tribe. It's interesting how much it plays into the game all the way through."
