Mary McDonnell Talks 'The Closer,' 'Major Crimes' and the 'Return' of 'Battlestar Galactica'

Mary McDonnell has a full agenda these days: The actress has been recurring on 'The Closer' for a couple of seasons, and she'll be a series regular when the TNT drama returns July 11. That job will keep her busy well into next year: The network recently announced that, after Kyra Sedgwick ends her run on 'The Closer' in 2012, McDonnell's Sharon Raydar character will be the lead of a spinoff titled 'Major Crimes.' Though McDonnell was eager to talk about those new developments in a recent interview, it was actually a past project that prompted the conversation in the first place. McDonnell played Laura Roslin on 'Battlestar Galactica' for four seasons, and when she heard that BBC America was going to start re-airing the entire series starting 10PM ET June 11, she was happy to promote the "return" of the groundbreaking drama. "I think it's perfect timing," McDonnell said. "'Battlestar' is so rich and relevant that one time through is not enough."

A Lostie Joins The Closer

Lost 's Jacob is coming to the aid of   The Closer . Actor   Mark Pellegrino , who also played   Supernatural 's Lucifer, will recur on the TNT series beginning in mid-August. Pellegrino will play Brenda's high-powered defense attorney Gavin Baker, described by executive producer James Duff as "brisk, gay and formidable. 'The Closer' Debuts Promo for Most Provocative Season 7

" The Closer " will return this summer with its most provocative season, so claimed a new promo for the seventh season. Deputy police chief Brenda Leigh Johnson is back, but something from her past will change everything in the new season.   While she defends herself, insisting that she did nothing wrong, she may not get support from anyone in the LAPD if she does not look out for herself.   Kyra Sedgwick   reprises her role as Brenda, with   Corey Reynolds , G.W. The Closer: Casting for Recurring Character

The new season of The Closer will bring with it a new enemy for Brenda Johnson. This TNT his is casting for a recurring attorney, one described by network insiders as "fearless and devious" and who will be suing Brenda and the LAPD on behalf of a dead gang member's mother. The lawyer will introduce himself to Brenda as a process server, serving everyone on the squad with papers. Except Sergeant Gabriel. The Closer returns with new episodes on July 12.

Mary McDonnell solves 'Major Crimes' in 'Closer' spin-off and other Turner networks news

The question of what will happen to "The Closer" has officially been answered. Turner Entertainment addressed the subject at its Upfront presentation for TNT and TBS, confirming that newly-minted "Closer" regular Mary McDonnell will headline spin-off "Major Crimes," starting summer 2012, after Kyra Sedgwick's run on the original comes to an end. TNT, decidedly committed to not rocking the boat, is also developing six new cop series and a series from writer Mitch Album ("Tuesdays With Morrie") about a D.J. who tries to revive his hometown of Detroit... via the also struggling medium of radio. Over at TBS, the network is developing an hour-long comedy about an Midwestern couple who decide to get married and a half-hour comedy about a man who starts dating again after his girlfriend cheats on him. "The Wedding Band," a comedy starring Austin Green, Melora Hardin and Harold Perrineau, was also officially picked up....

The Closer Promotes Mary McDonnell for Final Season

Mary McDonnell is getting bumped up to series regular status for the final season of  The Closer ,TVLine reports. The former  Battlestar Galactica  star, 58, will reprise her role as Capt. Sharon Raydor full time. She previously recurred during Season 5 and 6. McDonnell's promotion puts the future of  The Closer  further into question. Despite star Kyra Sedgwick's impending departure from the show, TVLine reported in January that TNT was hoping to keep the hourlong drama alive, either with a new lead or via a spin-off. The site now says the cable network is likely to spin off  The Closer  into a new show called  Major Crimes , however there is no word yet as to whether McDonnell will be involved. The new season of  The Closer  premieres Monday, July 11 at 9/8c on TNT.

TNT announces summer premieres for 'Falling Skies,' 'Franklin & Bash,' 'The Closer' and more

With summer just around the corner, TNT has firmed up premiere plans for new series "Falling Skies" and "Franklin & Bash" -- as well as return dates for plenty of returning series, including the (possibly/sort of) final run of "The Closer." "Skies," the high concept alien invasion thriller from Steven Spielberg starring "ER" vet Noah Wyle, bows Sunday, June 19, at the early hour of 9 p.m ET with a two-hour premiere. After that, it will air at 10 p.m. ET, with Season 4 of "Leverage" returning to its 9 p.m. slot on June 26.Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer's legal comedy "Franklin & Bash" makes its debut a few weeks earlier on Wednesday, June 1, at 9 p.m. ET.
