The Closer Promotes Mary McDonnell for Final Season

Mary McDonnell is getting bumped up to series regular status for the final season of  The Closer ,TVLine reports. The former  Battlestar Galactica  star, 58, will reprise her role as Capt. Sharon Raydor full time. She previously recurred during Season 5 and 6. McDonnell's promotion puts the future of  The Closer  further into question. Despite star Kyra Sedgwick's impending departure from the show, TVLine reported in January that TNT was hoping to keep the hourlong drama alive, either with a new lead or via a spin-off. The site now says the cable network is likely to spin off  The Closer  into a new show called  Major Crimes , however there is no word yet as to whether McDonnell will be involved. The new season of  The Closer  premieres Monday, July 11 at 9/8c on TNT.

After that, it will air at 10 p.m. ET, with Season 4 of "Leverage" returning to its 9 p.m. slot on June 26.Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer's legal comedy "Franklin & Bash" makes its debut a few weeks earlier on Wednesday, June 1, at 9 p.m. ET. 'The Closer': Six bonus episodes!

TNT is re-opening  The Closer . EW has learned exclusively that TNT just ordered six additional episodes of its veteran hit, extending its final season to prepare for a possible spin-off. The network expects to air the previously announced 10 episodes this summer, followed by five in the winter … and now another six in the summer of 2012. The final six will be the swan song for star Kyra Sedgwick (Brenda Leigh Johnson), while likely introducing a new central character who will headline the spin-off. The new show’s working title is….

'The Closer': TNT wants less closure from closing

When word came that "The Closer" would end at the conclusion of Season 7, TNT issued a glowing press release in which all parties praised each other for all they've accomplished and lamented having to see it's tenure on TV come to an end. Well, apparently they're so sorry they're reconsidering the whole "ending" thing altogether. Deadline reports that TNT is currently considering ways to get a little more life from its flagship series, which averaged more than 8 million viewers during its last season. Several options are being discussed. There's the quick, temporary fix: an additional six episodes tacked onto the current 15-episode season. And, more ambitiously, there's a possible 9-episode order for a spin-off of sorts, in which the non-Kyra Sedgwick members of the cast carry on in a different scenario, presumably with less "closing."Option #1 is clearly contingent on negotiations with Sedgwick, who's only contracted through the end of the 15...

'The Closer' to Continue Without Kyra Sedgwick?

Back in December the obits for 'The Closer' were being written after star Kyra Sedgwick announced the end of the series. Now, however, comes news that the farewells may have been premature, and that the drama could be carrying on without her. 'The Closer' is the most-watched basic cable series ever, and according to, execs at TNT are unwilling to let their flagship drama go. One of the scenarios currently being discussed at the cable network is extending the 15-episode (Final) Season 7 to 21 episodes. However, adding an extra six episodes is contingent on a deal with Sedgwick. Given she's reportedly the one who decided to end the series in the first place, it could be an uphill battle to persuade her to carry on.

The Closer Gets Another Christmas Present

I've never been impressed by Kyra Sedgwick's sticky-sweet work as LAPD deputy chief Brenda Leigh Johnson — her cornball accent grates on my Southern-born ears. But I can understand why SAG members (not to mention Emmy and Golden Globe voters) would fall for such a larger-than-life, scenery-chewing performance. What I don't get is the terminally mediocre The Closer receiving its fifth nomination for SAG's outstanding drama ensemble award. Sure, there are some good actors in the cast — J.K. Simmons is always AOK with me — but most of them are put through pretty standard procedural paces every week. How can the SAGs pass over such deserving shows as Breaking Bad, Justified, Terriers, Friday Night Lights and Damages in favor of this middlebrow time-waster? To Read More Click Here.
