Sean (Lucas Black) is sent to Japan to live with his father in Tokyo after an incident of street racing almost lands him time in jail in the United States. There, he encounters a lot of culture clash as he tries to integrate himself into Japanese culture. Upon a chance meeting with Twinkie (Bow Wow), Sean is introduced into the world of drifting, where he runs into DK, short for Drift King (Brian Tee).

After a humiliating defeat at the hands of DK, Sean is indebted to Han (Sung Kang) after Han allows Sean to use his car. Han "employs" Sean, sending him on various jobs to repay the costs of the car. Sean eventually learns more about drifting and encounters elements of the Yakuza. His presence entices Neela (Nathalie Kelley), who opens up to Sean. The relationship conflicts with DK, and both DK and Sean are drawn into a final battle that pits each other on a dangerous mountain pass.
