The Jane Austen Book Club is 2007 romantic drama film directed Robin Swicord, who also adapted the screenplay from the 2004 novel of the same name which was written by Karen Joy Fowler. The film stars Maria Bello, Emily Blunt, Kathy Baker, Amy Brenneman, Maggie Grace, and Jimmy Smits. The film is about six people from California who form a book club to discuss Jane Austen novels. The film premiered September 9, 2007 at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was also shown at the Dietrich Theater Fall Film Festival in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania on September 14, 2007. The film opened in limited release in the United States on September 21, 2007. It was rated PG-13 by the MPAA "for mature thematic material, sexual content, brief strong language and some drug use."

As five women and one enigmatic man meet to discuss the works of Jane Austen, they find their love lives playing out in a 21st century version of her novels. Sylvia (Amy Brenneman) is shocked when her husband, Daniel(Jimmy Smits), has left her after 25 years and three children. Jocelyn (Maria Bello), her best friend, has never married and now focuses obsessively on breeding dogs. Prudie (Emily Blunt) is a French teacher in her late twenties, in possession of a worthy husband yet distracted by persistent fantasies about sex with other men. Bernadette (Kathy Baker) has decided that she's topping the hill and can act a little dotty. Beautiful, risk-taking Allegra (Maggie Grace), Sylvia and Daniel's lesbian daughter, has quit speaking to her lover. And Grigg (Hugh Dancy), a young science fiction fan and computer whiz, is strangely unattached.
