More Information

Each episode of Zelda followed the adventures of the hero Link and the royal Princess Zelda as they defended the kingdom of Hyrule from an evil wizard named Ganon. Most episodes consisted of Ganon (or his minions) either attempting to capture the Triforce of Wisdom from Zelda, kidnap Zelda herself, or use some other villainous scheme to conquer Hyrule.

A common running joke of the series was Link’s repeated failure to convince Zelda that he deserved a kiss for his heroic deeds; whenever it seemed they were going to kiss, something bad would happen, or Link would say or do something that put Zelda off (though in episode 7 Link does kiss Zelda's doppelganger). Link’s fairy friend, Spryte, was always willing to give him a kiss for free, but due to her small size he never seemed to take serious notice. This theme was most likely inspired by the final moments of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and may itself have influenced the common belief that Link and Zelda are romantically involved in the subsequent games, an idea only rarely hinted at in the games themselves.

Zelda also had more of a protagonist role in the show than in the video games, where she is simply the character the player must rescue. While Link did have to save Zelda in a few episodes, she mostly battled side by side with Link, often preferring the bow and arrow as her weapon of choice.

As it was based on the original "The Legend of Zelda" game the cartoon never mentions the Triforce of Courage - this is because, prior to Zelda 2 the Triforce of Courage was hidden away in the Great Palace. The Triforces of Wisdom and Power, however, were featured in nearly every episode. Both were depicted as shimmering upside-down pyramid-like jewels, that floated by innate levitation and had the ability to speak. The Triforce of Wisdom was emerald-colored and spoke often, with a feminine voice and in rhyme. The Triforce of Power was ruby-colored and chose to speak only once, with a masculine voice and in vernacular. Both Triforces possessed considerable magical abilities-- the Triforce of Power infinitely more so than the Triforce of Wisdom; though the Triforce of Power's capabilities were displayed in only a single episode, whereas the Triforce of Wisdom's more limited abilities were featured rarely.

Link usually met Zelda’s obstinate rejection with his trademark sarcastic catchphrase, “Well! Excuuuuuse me, Princess!” which became popular in gamer culture of the period. This line was possibly adopted from the standup comedy of Steve Martin due to his popularity at the time. It was uttered approximately 24 times, and once in the opening credits. [citation needed] The series was to be continued but was canceled along with The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. Ironically, Link's last line in episode 13, the finale episode, was "At least I still have a job!".
