The Nines is a 2007 drama film written and directed by John August, and starring Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Elle Fanning and, as herself, Dahlia Salem. A troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed videogame designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways. The film debuted at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and made $62,745 in the U.S. box office.

John August, the acclaimed screenwriter of GO, BIG FISH, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and THE CORPSE BRIDE, makes his directorial debut with THE NINES, an intricately constructed intriguing blur of reality, virtual reality and metaphysical fantasy. The film unfolds in three parts, featuring the same actors in different (and in some ways overlapping) incarnations. |||| The film is divided in to three acts: "The Prisoner" tells of a troubled actor under house arrest living in another person's house because he burned down his own. / "Reality Television" tells of a television writer trying to get his pilot made. The house he lives in is the house the actor stays in. / "Knowing" tells of an acclaimed video game designer who is lost when his car breaks down, a situation shown in the pilot of the writer.
