The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of April 4, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   The Real Housewives of New York City (Season Premiere) Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. on Bravo Why: Bravo isn't for everyone, but it absolutely is for me. And despite my Jersey roots, the housewives who have found a permanent place on my queue are the badass ladies of New York. The hate is easy to understand — and sometimes warranted. The fabled Ramonacoaster is a rough ride; the "countess" keeps trying to make "music"; that one weirdo threw her prosthetic leg across a table. But that's also what makes this show so fun. It's bananas. And Season 8 should deliver the usual level of insanity. There's a new girl, Julianne Wainstein (Jules, obviously), so expect ruffled feathers, shit-talking, and hurt feelings. There's plenty of booze, finger-pointing, and so many opinions! So grab a bottle of Ramona Singer Pinot Grigio, a bag of Skinnygirl popcorn, and watch what happens. Prepare to talk about: Bethenny's health scare; Ramona's... upgrade; why Saint Carole Radziwill puts up with this nonsense.   American Idol (Series Finale) Thursday at 8 p.m. on FOX Why: "The series finale of American Idol ." At many points during the show's 15-season run, those words would have been music to my ears. But as the last Idol season nears its three-night finale, nostalgia is setting in. Maybe it was OG Kelly Clarkson bringing us all to tears a few weeks ago with her heart-rending performance of " Piece By Piece ," or perhaps it's been La'Porsha giving us life week after week. But Idol has corrected course just in time to say goodbye on the right note. Dozens of past finalists are expected to perform live, including reigning Country Queen Carrie Underwood. There's also a pre-taped medley from Clarkson (who's approximately 15 months pregnant). With all that star power, this celebration promises to be huge, entertaining, awkward, and messy. Just like the show itself. Seacrest out! Prepare to talk about: What would have happened if Kellegendary Clarkson hadn't won; pitchy moments; the actual winner of this season... maybe.   Catastrophe (Season Premiere) Friday at 3:00 a.m. on Amazon Why: The first season of Catastrophe was a delightful surprise. It's a wonderfully frank story of two people creating a family under really weird circumstances. Sharon Horgan had proven her writing and acting chops in the excellent Pulling , but who would've thought the comedian who became famousish because of his irreverent tweets would have such leading-man charisma? Rob Delaney is sweet and affable and a real actor. Together, he and Horgan created a show that is brutally honest and laugh-out-loud funny. So how does Season 2 compare? Really, really well, you guys. Thanks to a clever time jump and a continued willingness to show the ugly side of relationships, it's just as sharp and charming as ever. Prepare to talk about: How (wonderfully) little screen time the baby gets; scene-stealing Carrie Fisher; the lead couple's incredible chemistry and the scatological filth that comes out of their mouths.   T.J.
