The show's central character is Sir Mark Brydon (played by Isaacs) who, as British Ambassador to Washington, finds himself at the centre of a conspiracy that threatens to bring down Western governments. In his role as Ambassador, he must fight to prevent a war, while on a more personal level, he faces a terrible dilemma. Sharon Gless plays Lynne Warner, the United States Secretary of Defense, while Ben Daniels takes on the role of Nicholas Brocklehurst, the British Counsellor External Affairs. A secondary character is James Sinclair (Alex Jennings), the former British ambassador to the fictional former Soviet republic of Tyrgyzstan. Sinclair strongly resembles "diplomatic untouchable" Craig Murray, a real-life hard-drinking, womanizing former ambassador who also got embroiled in revealing human rights abuses in Central Asia.

The first episode attracted 5.7 million viewers, but by episode three the audience had dropped to 3.1 million. The series was released on DVD on 22 January 2007. In the United States, the show premiered on BBC America over the Presidents Day weekend of 17-19 February 2007 as a three-part miniseries, to conclude on 24 February 2007.

The series was repeated in the UK in June 2007, showing on BBC Four as part of Conspiracy USA Week.[1]
