The film is allegedly inspired by true events (the film's website says " The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family's vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known"), but there is no single documented case upon which the film is based. However, the story does contain elements that bear a resemblance to the real life Manson murders that took place in 1969, the still-unsolved Keddie resort murders that took place in California in 1981, as well as the family-murder case of Jeffrey R. MacDonald, among various home-invasions that have taken place in history. The script is commonly said to be a remake of the 2006 French horror movie Them, or "Ils", which is also about a couple attacked by strangers in their home. However, while the films are similar, The Strangers is not a remake of that movie. In fact, The Strangers was written two years before "Ils" was made. There have also been comparisons drawn between this movie, and the Austrian remake Funny Games, as they both deal with families fighting back against sadistic home invaders. |||| A suburban couple returning to their semi-secluded house after attending a wedding finds their lives suddenly thrown into chaos with the arrival of three malevolent, masked strangers in director Bryan Bertino's tense tale of survival. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as the couple forced to resort to violence they never thought themselves capable of as they struggle for their lives, and model-turned-actress Gemma Ward continues her transition from the catwalk to the silver screen as one of the merciless masked invaders.

The Strangers Summary
The Strangers is a 2008 horror film written and directed by Bryan Bertino and starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. Allegedly inspired by true events, the film follows a couple who are attacked and terrorized by three masked strangers in their remote vacation home. The Strangers was filmed in Florence, South Carolina, USA beginning on October 10, 2006 and finishing in 2007. The production's estimated budget was around $10,000,000. The release of the film did have some issues, however. The producers originally intended on releasing the film in summer 2007, but due to complications, the date was pushed back to the fall. The release was yet pushed back one final time, with a resulting official release date of May 30, 2008.The film is rated R for violence/terror and language, by the Motion Picture Association of America.
