The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of February 8, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   How to Get Away With Murder (Midseason Premiere) Thursday at 10:00pm on ABC Why: Hoo-boy, where to even start. First off, take a look at that picture . What is going on there?! Also, Annalise knew Wes when he was a kid? And he was NUTS? And it might be her fault? I don't even know what's going on with this show, because it's totally freakin' crazy all the time. But that's why people love it! It's the heroin-crack of dramas (heroin-crack is a thing, right?). Except that Viola Davis is a really great actress who can play cheese so well that you want to call it fromage and serve it to the Queen. This might be the pinnacle of television, guys. It really might be. Prepare to talk about: How Annalise should probably be immediately disbarred, like, yesterday; what Annalise did to Wes back when he was but a wee'un; why anyone would want to take her class at this point because it seems like nothing but tragedy befalls anyone around her; I mean, what is this, Hudson University ?   Vinyl (Series Premiere) Sunday at 9:00pm on HBO Why: Music! Sexy people! Drugs! ROCK 'N ROLL! Turns out the 1970s weren't just a time for amusing facial hair and an obsession with polyester, they were a culturally important decade, and now we have an HBO series about them. And it's based on Mick Jagger or something? Eeesh, that's not gonna end well (or it's gonna end really well with a house on a private Caribbean island, I don't know). Also it's from Martin Scorcese (just call him Marty like everyone else in Hollywood does). Yeah, OK, it'll probably be good, despite all the polyester. Prepare to talk about: The hair; the drugs; the streetcrime; the clothes; the music; boomer nostalgia: worse than millennial nostalgia, right?   The Walking Dead (Midseason Premiere) Sunday at 9:00pm on AMC Why: I've had to come up with a "Why" for this show approximately 90 times (conservative estimate) for this column, and you know what? I'm plumb out. If you don't know why you should be watching The Walking Dead by now, I can't help you. Move on. Read a book. Meet a girl (or boy). Enjoy your non- Walking Dead -watching lives together! But if you really need a reason, fine, here's one: Daryl Dixon is back. Finally. You're welcome, universe. Prepare to talk about: Sure, it's the zombie apocalypse and all, but why does everyone else's hair look OK when Daryl's always looks just... terrible? Does he coat it in grease? Does he fine tune his motorcycle with his head? Why? How does that work? This, in a world of zombies, is the most inexplicable thing. Really, it is. Also, again, why does no one call them zombies? What's the urge to even survive this? Everyone on this show is crazy or annoying or both! Except Carol. Carol keeps us all watching.     This is Leah E. Friedman 's final entry as the editor of SideReel.com. It's been real(ly wonderful). div.post p { text-align: justify; }
