'The Walking Dead': Rick vs. Shane -- who came out on top? [VIDEO]

The annual Academy Awards ceremony wasn't Sunday's (Feb. 26) only TV event. Finally, after more than a season-and-a-half of build up, "The Walking Dead's" embattled leader Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the former partner/BFF who cuckholded him, Shane (Jon Bernthal), came to blows over Rick's wife, Lori, and Shane's continued lack of faith in Rick as a leader. This wasn't just any knock-down, drag-out brawl. Oh no, Rick and Shane duked it out while a mini-herd of zombies came at them like a ton of bricks. Bricks that happen to be undead and hunger for human flesh. In one of the evening's most talked about scenes, seen online first at Zap2it, Shane says, "I don't think you can do it, man, I don't think you can keep [Lori and Carl] safe." That was probably the wrong answer considering Rick's response. 'Walking Dead': Rick And Shane's Brawl Alerts Zombies

It was an inevitable confrontation, and one Rick seemed determined to finally have when he invited Shane to come with him. They had that matter of what to do with Randall, the kid they rescued from the marauders in town last week on " The Walking Dead " (Sun., 9 p.m. EST on AMC). He'd tried to kill them and he's with a group of people that have proven both dangerous and deadly. Shane was pretty set on just killing him now and being done with it, but Rick instead wanted to drive him blindfolded and tied up away from the farm and set him loose. It would at least give him a fighting chance. It was a plan that could have worked out well, until Randall said that he knew both Maggie and Hershel. If that's the case, he may know the way back to the farm anyway. Rick had earlier pulled Shane out of the car to lay down the law. Lori, Carl and the baby are his and he's going to take care of them. What happened in the past happened, but now Shane needs to back off. But when Shane again brought up just killing Randall to eliminate his potential threat, Rick wouldn't have it. At this, Shane snapped and said what he'd really been thinking. Rick wasn't tough enough to take care of anyone, much less his own family. The altercation became quickly physical and very violent, with Shane looking once again like he was intent on killing Rick and being done with him, too. Unfortunately, before either of them could finish the other off, they disturbed a building full of walkers and had a whole new problem to deal with. After Shane got himself trapped on a school bus, Rick grabbed Randall and took off. In that moment, Shane believed Rick had left him. He surely would have left Rick behind to die, just as he had Otis. But Rick came back with the car and staged a quick rescue out the back of the bus. And then again pulled Shane out on the road to talk, again letting him know the way of things. Did the message sink in this time? Find out as "The Walking Dead" continues Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
