Trieu 'Dylan' Tran was born in Saigon, Vietnam. His family first immigrated to Canada to the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and then to Boston, Massachusetts where he was raised in the inner city. He attended five different high schools before graduating from Boston College High. In his own search for a college he landed a spot at American University in Washington, D.C. Since AU offered him the most student aid he accepted. Starting out as a pre-law major, he switched four times finally settling on a theatre major in his junior year.

Portrayed the title role of Richard in Shakespeare's Richard III his senior year at AU earning him a nomination for the Irene Ryan Award for Best Actor.

AU Department of Performing Arts awarded him Outstanding Actor Award jointly with his fellow actor and friend Ben Rishworth. The two of them made a cross country pilgrimage to Los Angeles, upon graduation.

In 2003 AU awarded him its first Distinguished Alumni Theatre Award in recognition of his early successes in the real world. This award was given at the opening of the new 300 seat Greenberg Theater.
