A lot of movies such as Iron Man and Spiderman are adapted from comic book characters. I had never heard of "The Spirit" in a comic book, but this movie looks like It's gonna really sell out on opening day.

I haven't heard anything GOOD about it. Looks terribly done with such a great start to a comic.
It didn't come from a comic book, it was originally a comic strip.
I watched the first 5 min. The cinematography was interesting but that's all that appealed to me. Maybe if I was familiar with the original story or if it been a better quality (camcopy) but I wasn't impressed.
Actually, it was a comic book, although not in the traditional sense we see now. Rather, it started as a comic book insert in the Sunday paper that could be removed and retained. It was later picked up by DC comics, and there was a cross-over with Batman. See Wikipedia
