The O.C. was cancelled for a few reasons:
1.Josh Schwartz, the producer & creator of the show believed it was a good time for the show to end.
2. The show's ratings went down more & more by the season and had "only" 4 million viewers by its last season.
3. The hit T.V. show "Grey's Anatomy" appeared at the exact same day and time, which was why a lot of people didn't watch.
I think that when they decided Marissa's death, the show didnt't have any more meat, as for most of us, whether we liked her or not, we must admit she was really a basic character.

Great post!
I think killing off Marissa was a terrible idea. I still enjoyed the show after that, and I guess it's good to add that extra dramatic edge that the show will allow things like that to happen, but it just wasn't the same show we knew and loved after that.
I agree with you Kendra, I quit watching it and started watching Grey's once Marissa died.
Think you summed it up, Nago!
Truthfully, the OC never regained the awesomeness of the first half of the first season.
It was like Josh Schwartz compacted all of his best ideas into the first 16 or so episodes. The second season was watchable, the third - *gulp* - and the 4th actually I thought did a decent job of improving upon the third, but the show had already lost all of its viewers.
"I think killing off Marissa was a terrible idea"
In fairness I don't think they would ever have written that into the storyline if it wasn't for Mischa Barton wanting to get out.. Of course it put the nail in the coffin, but it was all that Josh Schwartz could do, short of replacing the Marissa actor.. So we can just blame her for the OC being cancelled =P

Actually Mischa Barton in a recent interview said that it was the writer's decision to kill Marissa off, and that she would have gladly stayed with the show.
I think the show just ran out of steam towards the end, the characters went through so much that I guess they just ran out of stories to tell. Also it would have been difficult continuing the show into a 5th season as the characters would definitely be heading off to college, with Summer in Brown and Ryan in Berkeley, it would be extremely difficult to keep the show going unless you were to make all the characters go to the same college.
I think it was canceled coz it sucked! its horrible!
Mischa Barton didnôt wont to be in the show. thats why she died.
I always thought they killed off Misha Barton because she was so difficult to work with. Plus in real life she was a mess during the second/third season.
OC rules..
for those of the people who said..it sucks..u just don't know how to watch a good tv show
and kiling marissa is a terrible idea but..if they didn't kill marissa..ryan wouldn't have been funny or cute with taylor..

PLEASSE SIGN FOR A SPIN OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the O.C. I don't mind that they killed of Marissa because that is the emotion and excitement we crave for. The show just needs a little more drama and spark. I've lost that "I can't wait to see what happens next" feeling but I still love the show and am sad to see it canceled.
