New quirky (one might even say..."unusual"?) cop drama The Unusuals premiered on ABC last night.
With all of the cop dramas on TV these days (including the premiere of Southland on NBC tonight at 10)...was the show special/different enough to keep watching?
Note: The show premiered to a somewhat mediocre 6.8 million viewers, so you might not want to get too attached...

Eeek. Well, like I've already said, since I like it (alas Pushing Daisies), its probably done for...
I have to say i really love this show!... however I was also a fan of Veronica Mars, Firefly, Dark Angel, Joan of Arcadia and so many other great quirky shows that got the ax waaaaay before their time. I think the average viewer just doesn't appreciate great writing anymore. I really love this show and i hope it continues to get better in the ratings...
Another thing, as a college student I have to watch most of my TV shows online. My schedule just doesn't allow me to catch traditional TV at rigid times. Therefore, I don't agree with ratings calculations anymore because they simply are not accurate or an indicator of who is watching what.
Reality conglomerates like American Idol get sky high ratings because their viewers may be able to sit on their butts at 8pm on certain days but hard working journalism/media students who would love one day to have a job in television ;) can't watch or support their favorite shows because they are studying for exams... my point is: please ABC, don't penalize the hard working, quick witted young adult viewers....because one day you're gonna regret it.....
oh man krystlelovesgeorge, you just summarized my same exact problem. I don't think I could possibly add anything to that.
iam a real fan of this show but as with a lot of shows that i like it will get dropped for reality shows as those seem to be popular with ppl
I like this show since it's a silly cop show but it doesn't become so silly they make the cases and job seem easy. Plus I find most of the people intriguing though dispatch kinda gets on my nerves with her nonsense...
I agree with Krystlelovesgeorge: Since most awesome shows seem to be getting axed nowadays, The Unusuals might too. Loved Dark Angel and Joan of Arcadia too and think it's a shame that good shows like these get dropped.
The quirks of the characters in this show makes it different from most cop shows.
I love this show. It has an unusual (excuse the pun) take on the normal detective genre. Each character portrayed has an element of quirkyness, which is born out of something that has happened to them in their life. What is special about this is that unlike most shows, i have a soft spot for all of the characters and would be extremely frustrated if it simply disappeared of my computer monitor. I want to see how the characters grow - and again unlike a lot of shows, so far so good, the writers have not dragged the story lines out - we have got to the bottom of preacher boys extreme lifestyle change - I just love his ringtone!
I too seem to be inflicted with the curse of my favourite shows being axed - I , like Krystlelovesgeorge and Winchester-Chic was a dedicated fan of Dark Angel and still hope that one day jessica Alba will grace my TV again - one of the few shows that I actually watched on TV. I also enjoyed Bloodlines and Justice - poof - they were cancelled too.
Maybe the TV companies need to get together and have one site/channel where all their cancelled shows can be aired for the quirks like myself and forget about the ratings - you never know - I would not be surprised if some of these shows got much more viewers online than on TV in this day and age - and may well go on to experience The Shawshank Redemption Effect.
** Warning -- Spoilery Comments !! **
I couldn't watch the most recent ep. I was pleased they had perhaps brought the very annoying, trite storyline with the reformed officer to a close. Was it too much to hope for that they were going to let the "42" storyline wind toward a happy direction? Maybe the show was already verging on being too bleak and cliched for me, but they just lost me early into the most recent episode. I've liked the acting and found some of the characters on the show interesting and quirky, but found the quality of the writing inconsistent and sometimes disappointing. I say cancel it; renew Castle, which has (surprisingly) come into its own and is more deserving of renewal.
i love this show! u cant cancel it u just cant!!!
I like this show! I would watch it online the next day b/c the 10pm time slot was to late for me to watch. They should move it to an 8 or 9 pm slot...I bet it would get better ratings!!! I will miss this show!
I love this show and agree I watch all of my shows on-line, I watch a lot of shows weekly so that should some how be added to the ratings. This show should get another season
This is a great show however it needs time to grow. I prefer this show over Castle any day which is good for passing time but too predictable to enjoy sincerely. It seems like the Castle writers are trying to make it like Bones but its just average if anything.
The Unusuals has a got a surprisingly good mix of actors in their cast which bring humour as well as seriousness into the show.
The Unusuals is a great show. another good one bites the dust. chalk another one up to the lowest common denominator and mindless TV programming.
Unfortunately krystlelovesgeorge, and I am generalizing so please don't take this personally but its idiots like you, again this is not an attack on you but on media students and bean counters in general, that will be in charge in a few years time. As the present crop of executives from the same schools from the 70's and 80's that are in charge now.
I don't see much hope for quality fringe shows getting a go because if they don't make a good enough profit for the greedy executives and the share holders, then there out.
Quality and imagination have no place in TV or the Movies as long as the been counters are in charge, we will just keep getting Rocky after Die Hard after Rocky after Terminator after Die Hard after Rocky after Chuchy etc......or a variation of the same shows being produced, just like the upcoming remake of V. What absolutely, total fucken dickhead came up with the idea to make a remake of that show, couldn't they come up with something new and creative.
After that little rant I'd like to say that The Unusual's is a great show but wont last, it seems that people who lack imagination cant understand it, and that is the problem, there are more idiots out there that people with taste:(
Unfortunately olddragon, never become a lawyer. Although I do not take any offense at your comment, let me take this moment to clarify a few points.
While you speak so negatively of what is out there and of my personal taste, we seem to have a lot more in common then you think. According to your profile you have a great taste in sci fi and an affinity for a few NEW shows that will be appearing on upcoming fall schedules, such as Day One, Flash Forward and Vampire Diaries and V. The statistics for these shows making it to a second season are pretty slim. So your argument is your own loss.
As you seem to be a fellow lover of tv and of the sci fi/fantasy genre, then maybe you are directing your anger at the wrong person?? Maybe it's my youth gives me a certain "stick it to the man" quality that you have long lost olddragon, but imagination does have a place on television, the silver screen, and our computers! and if no one wants to change that then all I have to say is have a blast watching "Speidi" on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.....

Oh and please don't call me a "been counter" (I'm not very good at math....)
