I thought a that in order to be a true Jew your mother has to be Jewish. In the case of Sarah and husband are or were their mothers Jewish?

With religion or politics, discussions tend to get heated. In advance warning, please keep answers civil, or we'll be forced to delete them. Thanks in advance.

According to Wikipedia: Her father, a native of Brooklyn, was Jewish, the original family surname being "Bar-Kahn" ("son of Kohen"); Parker has said of herself, "I always just considered myself a Jew".

Opinions will vary greatly, I'm sure, whether tradition of mother lineage is the only allowable determining factor, or if it's possible through the father's lineage or through conversion with no lineage. I'll leave others to (respectfully) sort that out.
