It was a very close vote, but those of you who thought Harry Potter fandom would win over will hopefully feel all is right with the world with all the reasoning and good arguments that went on in the final round! Dumbledore, we still adore you, but Gandalf is the reigning wizard winner of SideReel!
This will be a tough one with a very intense and excellent pairing of the most wise, skilled, and wonderful wizards of all on our list: Gandalf and Dumbledore!
It's time to decide if the great and good wizard of Lord of the Rings or the great and good wizard of Harry Potter deserves to be victorious.

Gandalf, as much as I love Dumbledore as a character, Gandalf is literally the equivalent of an Archangel or even a Demigod in the Tolkien universe. Dumbledore is powerful as hell, but still just a man in the series, Gandalf is the next closest thing to a divine being on earth.

I can guarantee that most of the people who have voted for Dumbledore have only read HP and not bothered with LOTR. Sure Dumbledore's great, but he only helped to bring down one very dark wizard who managed to kill maybe a few hundred people in England. Gandalf defeats a frickin Balrog, dies, comes back to life because he's needed to finish the job, and helps to bring down the incredibly, intensely dark force that has been terrorizing Middle Earth and all it's hundreds of races for ages (in Tolkien' s sense of the word).

Well, this indeed would be a difficult one. Dumbledore has an Army, the Elder Wand and chooses not to use dark magic and stuff, plus, he actually manages to get into Harry's head almost a year after he died, don't know how he did it but it's pretty darn nifty.
Anyway, on to Gandalf. For those of you who missed it, a Balrog is also a demigod, not just some silly monster. Furthermore, Gandalf is a demigod as well. And he was ordered not to use his magic frivolously, so there you have it: he defeated temptation as well (as the only one of his order, I might add). He mostly steered and encouraged others, partly by the use of magic (see Theoden).
For the record, Sauron is also a Demigod, so a direct ocnfrontation would be quite spectacular.
But who are we kidding? They are both immensly powerfull in their respective universe, a pinnacle of Good and both very wise. They would probably settle this over a game of chess. On 50 boards simultanuously. Talking about the flowers in spring in Laurelindorenan, vacations on the beach, and smoking a pipe with a good book in front of a nice and cozy fire.
But in battle, Gandalf would definitly win. No problem.

You must not have paid attention. It's actually the reverse. Dumbledore stands more of a chance in the books I think, than in the movies.

Now, I love Gandalf, but he only survived because Gwaihir flew him back to the Elves who healed him.Its not like in his ultimate wisdom he decided he wanted to live and ,like healed himself. He just got lucky cause he has a giant eagle keeping tabs on him. Also, no one ever blamed Dumbledore for being the source of their misery. Also Dumbledore's good with kids. That's tough work, running a school. Especially a school where the curriculum mandates that kids will blow stuff up and play with dragons and stuff. All Gandalf ever did was ride around all alone in his gray (now white) cloak acting all emo and saying mysterious things... did he ever smile? If Dumbledore can deal with hundreds of angsty teens with magic powers (and still be chill enough to knit white eating lemon drops) he can take on anyone.

just cause a person dies and comes back does not mean anything, haryy died at the end then choose to come back. and he came back just as normal as when he died. it just comes down to the author wanting to over power a character, and j.k.rowling didnt do that which makes her a great writer.

Also, since you know nothing about Gandalf, dont assume he's not as smart as Dumbledore. And he can and has used magic, if nothing else, giving him the ability to use unlimited magic would overpower HIS character. Gandalf is actually extremely underpowered

Yeah Dumbledore dies. He sacrifices his life to save the soul of a child and the life of a friend. He's brave like that. Gandalf's power is only surpassed by Sauron in a head to head duel Sauron would win but Gandalf figures out how to destroy him any way. If Gandalf can take down the king of all evil then Dumbledore doesn't stand a chance. Dumbledore couldn't even stop Voldemort one of his former students.

Aside from Gandalf being a Maiar and thus immortal, his magic has no limit, and thus, he easily can combat Dumbledore. Also, Gandalf has Naryu the Ring of Fire, thus most of his combat magic is fire related.
As old as Dumbledore is, he's reliant on his wand, whereas Gandalf has no need for such instruments, although through his staff he can work mechanical spells, he is able to work magic without a staff.

I love Harry Potter, I hate LOTR, but I think Gandalf would win. Based off what little knowledge I've garnered about LOTR, Gandalf freaking faced demons. Just because gandalf killed that small beast, uggh, he said some long complicated spell which didnt do anythinjg! then he actually had to stab at it. have you seen in the fifth movie when dumbledore slashes at the fire snake. he dosent say anything! he could avada kedavra the crap outta the beast and gandalf, and gandalf wouldnt be able to deflect it. have you seen the waterball that he made form around voldemort? or in the books the fire whip that wrapped around him! the fire cyclone in te 6th book and movie. he could make pure energy out of anything. he has an amazing mind he figured out voldemort and his secrets out of nothing! he dosent need a special wand to help him he is the most powerful wizard of all time. Love Dumbledore, of course, but Gandalf is just classic. He's been around since the beginning of the world, and the only thing that could bring him down was a Balrog! Oh, and when this happened, he came back to life. Pretty much unbeatable, even by Dumbledore.

As much as I love LOTR, I'd have to say Dumbledore. The way Gandalf fights Saruman the White is just weak; all he does is throw him against a wall a couple times... then loses. Dumbledore can create rings of fire, fly, teleport, etc. Gandalf cant even fly himself off the top of the tower, he had to get a bird to do it for him.
Gandalf turns from grey to white which makes him stronger, probably stronger than Dumbledore, but Dumbledore is waaaay smarter. And even though Gandalf killed a Balrog, all he did was break the ground underneath him, which isn't that impressive... meanwhile Dumbledore is fighting off hundreds of zombies with a ring of fire AFTER drinking a potion that almost killed him.
Dumbledore has better control over his magic where Gandalf is merely a conjurer of cheap tricks.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan but anyone with the slightest ounce of logic can see that Gandalf totally has this one in the bag. Hmm Voldemort reined for 50 some odd years and made his first kill Right under Dumbledore's nose sounds real effective there. As someone who has read both series and loves both movie series, and these two characters. There is no way Dumbledore could defeat Gandalf, not that it would be a fair fight. The Wizards of the Tolkien universe are on an entirely different level then those of the Harry Potter universe. They aren't even human, they merely dain to take human form. As powerful as he is Dumbledore is only a man. While Gandalf's human form can die, as anyone who has seen the movies or read the books can atest, even death cannot stop Gandalf. Come on people!

I thought that the Harry Potter series went stale after the third book.. however, I do think that in a real match-up Gandalf would dominate.
While Dumbledore was a powerful wizard.. perhaps the most powerful wizard of the HP universe, Gandalf is more than a wizard. He really is a physical manifestation of life in his universe. Dumbledore is a master of his trade while Gandalf is interconnected with his trade.
There is one thing that I would like to point out here though which both characters exemplify. Both Gandalf and Dumbledore are "movers and shakers". They make things happen in their Universe. On their own, they would be broken, but they unite their allies and become the figure head for light. ... without needing magic.

To the people saying DD is braver because he went willingly to his death, firstly he was weeks, if not days away from death already. Which was his own doing for being too careless, as he admitted. On the night of his demise he was drunk from drinking that evil potion. Gandalf either would have been to wise to go and drink it without thinking for more than 2 seconds of alternatives, or he would've done it anyways and it wouldn't have affected him because he's a badass maiar.
Gandalf didn't know he was going to be brought back, does that make him brave? No, bravery has nothing to do with it. Dumbledore is a puppeteer who has to use horny virgins to get the job done. Even from beyond the grave he manipulates them. The only people Gandalf controlled were the Dwarves, and that was only so Sauron's armies wouldn't have a free reign across the North. And in doing so they regained their kingdom and killed a dragon. Everybody wins.
Without Gandalf the world would have fallen. He had to deal with traitors, the selfishness of the Dwarves, the fear of the Elves, the weakness of Men and the bone idleness of Hobbits. Dumbledore could've chosen to be Minster for Magic, but felt that striving with them for control over a boy was far more interesting.

I've read both series of books and I must say Gandalf would most certainly win.
I noticed that for the most part that the majority of people who voted for Dumbledore seem to have based their entire comparison on a simple movie basis.
Gandalf overall books and movies is more skilled and more powerful than Dumbledore ever was. Dumbledore in my humble opinion was just a gifted wizard but no chance he could ever defeat Gandalf considering Gandalf's ability to rise from the dead and his overall demigodness.

It's pretty clear to anyone over 16 that Merlin is easily the most powerful wizard in popular fiction, followed closely by Goddess Willow.
Merlin is master of space and time and son of the Devil (aka, a demi-god). I think people have seen too many Disney cartoons or the BBC series and use that watered down Merlin to base their view. In some comic books he is all knowing and all powerful.

I think the problem with Merlin is that he's a character in a legend that's taken on a life of it's own. I've read a lot of different takes on the Arthur legend, and Merlin is always different. Sometimes he's an all-powerful wizard, sometimes he's just a wise druid, sometimes he's more of a scientist in a world of ignorance.. it's a little tough pin-point exactly who Merlin is anymore.

Gandalf seems to be just as afraid of death as Voldemort. One thing Voldemort feared worse other than death...Dumbledore.
Would not Gandalf share that fear if he was faced up against Dumbledore.

Dumbledore knows of the ancient and new magic. He teaches and is aware of it all. He is brilliant and masterful. He CANNOT be beaten one on one.

Gandalf mostly because he is more powerful than Dambledore. Don't get me wrong Dumbledore is very powerful, but not as powerful; I mean Gandalf came back from death and well it saddens me to say that Dumbledore didn't, also Gandalf can take on hundreds of enemies at once in critical condition, but Dumbledore couldn't even take on a couple-few. Either way this is all fictional and will never really matter so...ya.
Okay so I know that the voting is over and I totally think the right wizard (Gandolf) won, but I just have to add a couple of comments about what other people wrote.
1. Dumbledore was a good wizard and he was powerful, but the source of the power was from the Elders Wand. Since he had it, he was able to defeat all these other powerful wizards, which then gave him the reputation of being even more powerful then he really was.
2. Dumbledore was at one time a very selfish individual and the only reason he changed and became into the Head Wizard we all love, was due to his guilt over the death of his sister, which he helped cause.
3. Yes, Dumbledore did decide to die to help save Malfoy's soul, but Gandolf too was willing to give up his life to save the other 8 of his companions from certain death....along with the entire Middle Earth. He was willing to go out, fighting the Balrog to his death to defend what he believed to be precious, while Dumbledore had lost hope and decided it would be easier for him to quietly slip into the peace of death and leave Potter to deal with it.
4. Whoever commented and said that Dumbledore is better than Gandolf because choosing to stay dead is harder than living, is a complete idiot.(I really don't mean offense, but it must be said.) Life is snuffed out roughly 275,000 times a day. Honestly, dying is the easy part, living when you have nothing to live for or living when everybody around is dead and your alone, that is the hard part. Gandolf could have stayed dead and not come back to fight against Sauron, but he did. Dumbledore bailed at the last minute, succumbing to the guilt he had built inside for all those years.
5. Actually comparing these two wizards is really the hang up here because Dumbledore is the ultimate kiddie wizard while Gandolf is the fantastic adult wizard. In both realms they are masters and darn good in what they do, but comparing them to each other is like trying to turn a marshmallow into a pineapple....just doesn't work.
Although I do think that Gandolf would win this fight, I have a few things to say. The first one is about the whole "coming back to life" argument people are using. Remember, Dumbledore also remained powerful after death in 2 ways:
1) Harry remembers that "Dumbledore will never truly be gone from Hogwarts when the ones that remain are loyal to him." Thus, while his physical body may be gone, his presence continues to be felt and he retains power.
2) At the end of the 7th book, Dumbledore returns to Harry at the half-way point of death (portrayed as Kings Cross) and explains everything to him, thus ensuring that Harry returns to life and can defeat Voldemort for real. Also remember that in JK Rowling's world, nothing can bring a person back from life, and while Rowling draws much of her details from mythology, there are no demi-gods in the world of HP.
Apart from the death argument, I also wanted to note that the reason Dumbledore has the Elder Wand is because it chose him; Rowling makes certain that her readers know that "the wand chooses the wizard" by repeating this numerous times throughout the book. Therefore, contrary to what india51 said, the power does not come fully from the Elder Wand- it is a combination of the two that makes Dumbledore the most powerful wizard in the world.
All this being said, I still believe Gandalf could take him, merely based on his status as more than mortal. The magic used in LOTR is 100x greater than the magic in HP- this discussion would be the same if we asked who were more powerful, Voldemort or Sauron.... obviously Sauron would kick Voldemort's ass.
dumbledore dies so that voldy can never have the true power of the wand..because snape kills dumbly voldy thinks the power is transfered to him and so kills snape when actually the power went to malfoy because he defeated dumbly witht the expelli shit...

gandalf isnt afraid of death he sais some shit to pippin about it not being the end its just another path one that we all must take or some shit... and when he fights the balrog he practically gives up his life with little thought he doesnt fear it he just tries to avoid which makes sense..he cant do a lot if hes dead....
