Rate It: Did Defying Gravity get your 5 Stars? - Featured

| loading

ABC's highly promoted space drama, Defying Gravity, aired its 2-hour premiere last night, with the 'Pilot' then 'Natural Selection,' so what did you think?

I have to say this one didn't start out with a 5 star possibility for me since it sounded like an odd and possibly cheesy premise, but it did, as show star Ron Livingston promised, deliver more than just relationship drama in space. But it did still have a lot of that too.

What I liked:

*The Battlestar Galactica-style flashbacks were a little lame, but they did give us a decent background on the characters.

*Ron Livingston. Without him, I don't think I would've gotten through the full 2 hours since the rest of the characters and acting was relatively awful and uninspired.

*The "original" concept. Yes, space has been done in various movies and shows, but besides the probably failed Virtuality, I believe a space journey has not been fictionally documented yet for a regular series.

What I disliked:

*The "destiny" theme. I almost like the idea of mixing science and beliefs/religion, but it seems like they're trying too hard to make this more than just an interesting and dramatic space journey. BSG just ended. Let's not try to make another epic space drama about destiny, fate, people controlled by some outer/inner force.

*The set-up that everyone's slept with or is going to sleep with everyone else. Did the show creators not learn from this dead end on Grey's Anatomy that it's not clever or necessary to have that many love octagons?

*The crying baby. Really? The female astronaut is haunted by the crying of her aborted baby/guilt? Not a fan.

So what did you like and dislike about the premiere? Overall, I give it a 3/5, and with the way it dragged on, I'd say that's a bit hopeful and generous.

What's your rating? Are you excited for more or skeptical that this show has any promise?

it gets a big fat zero from me as i could not watch the endings because when it got to about 34+ mins the vid stopped but the talking carried on when the vid started again the action was behind what ppl were saying i tried to watch the ending on megavideo but it was the same so i dont think i am going to watch it any more

All with you about the baby/abortion-plot.

As I have never seen Battlestar Galactica I don't know about those flashbacks but in Gravity I liked them.

I really liked the Indian guy, sad that he had to stay behind.

The "German" is getting on my nerves, that actress is normally blond (-ish) and does not have this East-European weightlifter look.

But, I have to admit I am kind of excited about the whole package and will keep watching for now :)

I think the show has potential i mean i think the whole destiny thing will make more sense when you find more out about whatever that weird thing is that is dictating things around the ship (like the baby crying its cuz of 'it' that she hears it cry)

Generally for me anything that's in space gets a big + from me at the very start since I love space. I also like the mystery beeing in Defying Gravity. It's not BSG but I'll surely keep watching :)

Reminded me a bit of the 'Virtuality', but to be honest I found this series a lot more catchy and seems to me that it has potential becoming a great mystery/sci-fi show. And yet they have to pack the episodes with relationship drama crap, sure a certain amount is understandable since they have chicks on board but c'mon. It's a sci-fi show set in space, how many women are actually gonna watch this, since as a guy I'm sick of the weepy drama and relationship issues. But yeah, found it far better than Virtuality and will keep on watching this one.

It was great, the characters where interesting, the design was technological but not too extreme like star trek series (warp drive , holo deck & etc) the flashback did help the audience understand the personalities of the characters but hopefully they were only for the pilot episode ,,, as the show is about the astronomer life in space not what they went through training,,,.

I gave it 4 star. Because you can't put 3.5 star. The story seems odd, but I like the artistic filming. But I'll watch again, just because it was the first 2 episodes. Maybe we are going to get some sci-fi-action (I have faith).

I thought she was pregnant - she hasn't aborted yet and I suspect that the 'controller won't allow her to - hence the discovery in advance that the space suit had a leak etc.

I liked the hinted at idea in Virtuality that they were all in a virtual programme - there was always the idea that it could have developed into a way of them trying to get out of it - but I''m liking Defying Gravity so far. 4 stars so far.

I gotta say I'm not really sure about this one yet. I had great hopes since I always wished for a "not so far in the future space travel" story. But for me there is too much relationship bs. Why is it always that everyone had to sleep with everybody else or stuff like that. IMHO a spce journey by itself would be challenging enough and creates tension between characters. For me the background story just seems over the top.

To the writers I woud say: stick a little more to the science in SciFi

Overall, I like the show; the acting and the plot, etc.; they DO need a better technical advisor, though; I mean zero-G (or at least micro-G) for everything except the people themselves?

Discounting that, however, it's a good show.

With each episode, I like the show more and more! It really tugs at your heart and soul, plus as the scifi and space element that makes it irresitable!!! :-)

I think it's interesting that Maddux's vasectomy has 'healed up' and thus has impregnated the female astronaut. If you noticed the men were all given them before their space missions - I wonder if any of the others have healed as well? Maddux presumably doesn't know she's pregnant yet, so that's a lot twist to come. And the mysterious 'they' are manipulating everything - the changes to their bodies (inc I suspect, the healed vasectomy), the heart problems that meant the crew had to be changed at the last minute, everything. One thing though. They'd better start letting us know a bit more about 'them' pretty soon or they'll start to become a silly bore.
