Nominations are now closed. Come join in the voting round to determine the top dog TV detective on SideReel:
Fav Detectives: Vote for your Favorite TV Detectives!
Our very favorite USA Network detectives return this Friday, August 7th as Psych kicks off its 4th season, and Monk begins its 8th and final season!
As these mysterious and fun new seasons start up, we want to know if Adrian Monk, Shawn Spencer, Burton 'Gus' Guster, or another TV detective holds the high honor of SideReel's very favorite TV detective.
Do you prefer the silliness of Psych's beloved duo, the endearing neurosis of Monk's genius, the spunky, quirkiness of Veronica Mars, or maybe the seriousness of CSI: Miami's Horatio Caine?
Nominate your favorite TV detectives from classic to current, and choose as many as you like! Also, feel free to mention a detective already nominated by another Reeler as after this nominations round, we'll choose the top 10 nominated detectives to have a face-off for the title of SideReel's very favorite detective!

Shawn and Gus!! They are the perfect crime fighting duo. They solve crimes while making obscure 80's references, creating sweet aliases, and generally being hilarious. And don't forget the sweet hair! Pysch is the best because it doesn't pretend to take itself seriously
oh man veronica mars ftw but I absolutely adore Gus and Shawn as well as Monk. I don't know man I love VM because it was a kickass series but I have more LOL's with Gus and Shawn. And Monk is just good at anytime of day. This is a mean question!
Shawn (Psych), hands down. after him comes Cal Lightman (lie to me), then Richard Castle (Castle), then Jack Carter (Eureka). and yea, i also believe House gets special mention in this category, but its not his profession, so he doesn't make the list. i like Monk too, but his eccentricities irritate me a little to much for me to really like him.
Shawn and Gus definitely
Veronica Mars and without a doubt Shawn and Gus! :)
most of the cast of Pushing Daisies
Emerson
Ned
Chuck
Olive
its a lot easier to solve a murder when you can bring the dead back to life.
Rebus is great. Gotta love a Scottish Detective who's two-drinks to the wind all the time. Seriously, the first time I read one of the books, every second sentence seemed to be "and then he ordered another scotch." The show is really great though.
But my other nomination would have to go to Angel. And Sam and Dean. Sure.. neither Angel, Sam or Dean is exactly a "detective" in the strictest legal sense of the word, but all of them have to do their homework and end up solving some sort of a case. And Angel really does have that classic film-noir detective style going for him most of the time. ... if only we could have seen David Boreanaz belting Peter Lorre around the room a little bit.
definitely the duo from Bones, they look at bones and capture criminals.. dude thats a trip
then Criminal Mind... come on they basically predict wat the criminals are doin!!!!!
is Dexter a detective cuz if he is... awesome serial killer detective and i dont mean he arrest serial killers... he kills serial killers
Mentalist is tight the dude looks like his faded and he does magic tricks... and yea.... fights crime...
and hmmm yea psychs ok, monks better... if you want to laugh psychs for you if you want to see a dysfunctional detective monks for you...
I'm all for Crime-Fighting teams!
Shawn/Gus from Psych
Ned/Emerson/Chuck/Olive from Pushing Daisies
Gibbs/Tony/Ziva/McGee from N.C.I.S.
Booth/Bones from Bones
Kate Beckett/Richard Castle from Castle
I like Shawn and Gus from Psych...its a really hard choice but they are my favorite :)
Has to be Veronica Mars surely... I have never watched a show with a more intelligent and sassy lead character like her before. She is a crime busting genius who happens to be hilarious at the same time. If I was murdered, I would definitely want her on the case, simple as.
If I were to be realistic though, I guess I should nominate anyone who has ever been on Law and Order like the late Jerry Orbach who played Lennie Briscoe. Yeah it isn't as glamourous as CSI, and the funny's don't come a long as often but Law and Order pretty much rewrote the crime genre and it is still going today. A lot of shows owe their existence to L & O.
Charlie Crews - Life
Shawn and Gus, Lassiter and O'Hara - Psych
Richard Castle, Kate Beckett - Castle
Cal Lightman - Lie to Me
Don Eppes - Numb3rs
Jethro Gibbs, Tony DiNozzo, Timothy McGee, Ziva David - NCIS
(This list isn't really in order)
Sorry for double post, but also
Sherlock Holmes (played by Jeremy Brett in the BBC series) and Dr. Watson (played by Edward Hardwicke)
Truly the best Holmes and Watson I've ever seen.
Lord Peter Wimsey (played by Edward Petherbridge) in the BBC mini series from the 80s based on Dorothy Sayers' novels Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, and Gaudy Night is also a very clever detective. Also, Harriet Vane (played by Harriet Walter) contributes.
VERONICA MARS
House
Shawn Spencer
Veronica Mars
ok here we go in no particular order
1/Hercule Poirot
2/Sherlock Holmes
3/ philip marlowe
4/perry mason
5/ lord peter wimsey
6/ miss jane marple
7/monk
8/ sam spade
9/cloumbo
10/ inspector morse
the list is endless its who you like that really counts
I have to agree with dude above me, Sherlock Holmes BBC i seen them all.
Also I want to nominate """Robert Goren""" from Law and Order Criminal Intent first 3 seasons, his knowledge about so many odd jet usefull aspect of life, the way he sneak up to people and slowly gets in their head, and his advers variet of never shown jet utterly usefull friend make him, make him in my opinion the best of all Law and Order series, and what would this contest be without Law and Order, the origin of Detective TV series of the last few years, lets face it, Monk deterctive techniek look alot like those of Goren, if you take away his fears odd behavior, you got Goren including an assisten.
Anyone who nominates Eppes must be a mentally disabled person, I wonder if he can tie his shoes, or if he needs help getting the TV on and to the right channel,
and who typed in his nominations?
Sherlock Holmes
Robert Goren

1 Sam Dean
2 House
3 Monk
4 Columbo
Gus and Shawn are awesome.
Have to say also Veronica Mars. And Patrick Jane from The Mentalist. And Charlie Crews from Life.
Have to say im biased because I love all detective shows so think theyre all great. But those 4(5 technically) stand out :]
Definitely Monk.
Followed by Columbo.
Monk rocks, he is funny as hell.
Columbo ofcourse second.
I think Robert Goren is good to, i saw him a few years ago, had to look him up, he seems to be quite popular here to.
lol, i did think sam and dean would qualify, but they are sure good at what they do,
i think they should count to.
sam and dean
Veronica Mars and Adrian Monk !
Monk Sam and Dean Robert Goren!!!!
VERONICA MARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The most intelligent/sassy and whitty character ever created!!!! and she isn't all prim and proper like some of the detectives, she toughens up and gets even!!!! not afraid of revenge
Then i suppose Angel cos he is great t look at when he's staring off in deep brooding thought........yum lol
definitely booth and bones!
they rock!
cant wait for the next season to start!
Dude the only thing you want her to investigate, is that thing under your pants, maybe she can give you hand with it. Not a murder investigation.
I would like to Nominate Winchester boys, sam and dean (if that is possible)
Monk is cool, but my favorite is Robert Goren to LAO CI, man that guy is insane good.
Too hard to just pick one!
Veronica Mars for sure.

Definitely have to cajillion (since several people have already seconded and thirded) Veronica Mars.
And I second Sam and Dean Winchester
I'll also second Angel
And nominate Paul Ballard from Dollhouse
And Melinda Gordon from Ghost Whisperer
Sam and Dean hands down, second robert goren
Shawn and Gus and Sam and Dean Winchester
Booth and Bones!!
Sookie Stackhouse from True Blood
I have to agree that I'm curious to see if the results would be different if they hadn't chosen the psych boys as a backdrop. But as it is they did and it reminds me of how much I love them!! so...
the psych boys shaun and gus
ncis- dinozzo and gibbs
the winchester boys dean and sam
veronica mars was awesome as well
Dr. Cal Lightman (Lie to me)
Richard Castle & Kate Beckett (Castle)
Shawn Spencer & Carlton Lassiter (Psych)
Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars)
Paul Ballard (Dollhouse)
Robert Lewis ('Lewis' & 'Morse')
Barneby (Midsummer Murders)
House (House)
Columbo (Columbo)
and of course Sherlock Holmes!!
Oh this is super hard but I would have to say Shawn and Gus. Patrick Jane is also really good. the NCIS team (Tony, Ziva, Gibbs, Mcgee, etc) are really good too. I also really love Castle. But for number 1 I'd def choose either Shawn and Gus or Jane.
Everyone is choosing classic detectives! I didn't think they would stand a chance but as others are doing it I am going to do another post...
The original Charlies Angels. Ok so maybe not the BEST detectives in the world but for a time it was the number one detective show (in the world) so I definitely think they deserve a mention. And hey, have you ever seen them not solve a case? I don't think so...
Another of my faves has to be Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote. However, after much deliberation I have decided not to nominate her as I always thought it was wierd LOTS of people seemed to meet a sticky demise when around her... Talk about cursed....
So that is...
-Veronica Mars,
-Lenny Briscoe (Law and Order)
-Original Charlies Angels
-and (not) Jessica Fletcher lol.
Shawn and Gus
debra morgan from dexter should win.
second i choose shawn spencer
Shawn and Gus baby!
Robert Goren
Sam and Dean
Shawn and Gus
Columbo
House
Barneby (south park)
Chief wiggum (simpson)
Do Mulder and Scully count? Cuz Mulder and Scully are definitely the best!
In order:
1. Mulder & Scully
2. Booth & Bones
3. Angel & the gang
4. The Pushing Daisies gang (Ned, Chuck, Emerson, Olive)
5. Veronica Mars
Det. Frank Pembleton (Homicide: Life on the Street) & Columbo
Sam and Deen, Robbert Goren, Colombo
To bad my votes dont reall matter any more,
Psyche or Veronica mars will win.
made top 5 now
1 Psyche 19
2 Veronica and Mars 18
3 Sam and Deen 15
4 Robbert Goren 13
5 Monk 11
Supernatural ( Sam and Dean)
Chuck
Psych (Shawn and Gus)
The Mentalist
Veronica Mars
Booth and Bones
Angel
Sam and Dean
House
Shawn and Gus all the way
Shawn Spencer & Gus
Patrick Jane
Kate Beckett & Richard Castle
Ned & Chuck & Emerson & Olive
Paul Ballard
Angel
and people need to stop nominating house
I can see their reasoning behind it, but he's not a real detective. He just figures things out he doesn't solves crimes.
Veronica Mars
Harry Dresden & Karrin Murphy (that show was waay too short, but still!)
Paul Ballard (Dollhouse)
Sam and Dean Winchester
James Rockford (old, but hilarious :))
The A-team (mercenaries who did a lot of detective work?)
Veronica Mars
Sherlock Holmes
Shawn and Gus
Seeley Booth and Temperance "Bones" Brennan from Bones.
Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan from Bones
Veronica Mars
Booth & Bones
Sam & Dean from Supernatural
:)
I second:
Sam and Dean (Supernatural)
Angel, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, Cordelia Chase, Winifred Burkle (Angel)
Booth and Bones (Bones)
Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars)
Shawn and Gus (Psych)
Kate Beckett and Richard Castle (Castle)
Cal Lightman (Lie to Me)
But also, what about TORCHWOOD?
Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, anyone?
shawn and gus from psych all the way!! wat a great show
the the patrick jane from the mentalist tat guy is hot and hilarious
then bones and booth! i mean david boreanaz and bones solving crimes plus its a deadly show!!!
This is my list of the ones that come to mind. There must be more than this but these should all be included:
The Mentalist - Patrick Jane (Very Smart).
House MD - Dr. House
Veronica Mars - Keith Mars (as good a detective as his daughter but not quite as cute).
Veronica Mars - Veronica Mars
Bones - Seely Booth
Psych - Shawn Spencer
Sherlock Holmes - S. Holmes
Inspector Gadget - Penny (she was the smart one).
Batman - Batman (It's Batman).
Matlock - Conrad McMasters (responsible for Ben's impressive record).
Eureka - Jack Carter (dumbest man in town but solves everything).
Dexter - James Doakes (Only one able to figure out Dexter).
Doctor WHO - The Doctor
The Wire - Lester Freaman (very smart in police matters)
The Wire - Jimmy McNulty (willing to do anything to catch the bad guy).

plus others I'm sure...
Booth and Brennan (BONES)
Greg House (HOUSE)
Jane (THE MENTALIST)
Matlock (MATLOCK)
COLOMBO
Beckett and Caste (CASTLE)
Deb Morgan (DEXTER)
Don Eppes (NUMB3RS)
Nick Vera (COLD CASE)
And if one was to go for a choice of CSI? I would pick the cast of Las Vegas. True, they are not detectives, only crime scene investigators, but come on! From Grissom to Nick, you cannot get enough of their reruns!
and one that everyone seems to forget
MARTY CRANE (FRASIER!)
...who can forget the episode with the dead hooker?
One word: CLASSIC!
Charlie Crews -Life
Patrick Jane, Teresa Lisbon - The Mentalist
Ned/Emerson/Chuck from Pushing Daisies

4. Monk / Monk
5. charlie crews & dani reese / Life [RIP]
6. robert goren & alex eames / Law & Order: CI
7. zach nichols & megan wheeler / Law & Order: CI
half of these that people are posting shouldn't even qualify
i would say sam & dean but they aren't really detectives and they solve paranormal "crimes" if anything
oh also everyone else on the SVU cast; the captain, munch, odafin tutuola
VERONICA MARS!!!
Robert Goren
Sherlock holmes
House
Columbo
Det. Frank Pembleton-Homicide: Life on the Streets
Harry Dresden - Even thought the books are way better than the tv show... Plus he can set things on fire with his mind.
Gibbs - Who doesn't love a good head slap.
House - Always(Mostly) finds the perpetrating malady.
Cal Lightman - Incorrigible, scary stare, can read you like a neon sign.
Dr. Who - The angels have the phonebox!
Brennen Booth - Ooo illiteration!
Angel - Season 1 before everyone went crazy and they sold out to Wolfram and Hart
Veronica Mars - Heard it was good(awesome)
That's all I can think of for now. I'm sure there are a whole lot more.
Veronica Mars
They whole of the NCIS team :-
Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Anthony DiNozzo, Ziva David, Timothy McGee, Abby Sciuto, Dr "Ducky" Mallard, Jimmy Palmer and former Special Agent Catlin Todd.
I was wondering if the people who are nominating people like Columbo and Miss Marple (ect) are doing so because they actually watch the show and think they're good or is it just because they are really famous detectives?
I second Robert Goren
robert goren, sam and dean, monk, columbo.
PSYCH!!!! Psych is awesome!!! both crime and comedy!! who doesnt love that!
but i also do have 2 say castle 2!! cuz psych and castle r kinda a like well i mean genres!! comedy and crime!!!
I love shawn and gus. Psych is hysterical. Monk is great too, but he's got nothing on Gus. Monk needs a comic relief black guy too haha :D
For me it's got to be The Doctor from "Doctor Who"
The tenth doctor specficly
Best detective on any planet/time/galaxy/alternate dimension
How quickly we forget Moonlight...
Mick St-John
I want to second Goren
booth and bones!!!
cant wait for the next season to begin!
- Charlie Crews
- Veronica Mars
of course shawn and gus, with a classic shout out to sherlock holmes, and with the local colour of inspector murdoch
how about everyone from Homicide?
esp. Frank Pembleton
and Reese and Crews from Life
Psych, Hercule Poirot, Castle, Pushing Daisies, Bones
Shawn and Gus! Who else?
Gotta be Gil Grissom! The man is a legend, an absolute genius CSI would have been nothing without him he made the show and consequently there were spinoffs but no leader of a CSI team is as good as Grissom
<3 <3 numb3rs <3 <3
monk
criminal minds
cold case
psych
