Send a Compliment at 16:46 PDT, 8 October, 2009Southland hadn't even premiered its second season yet (it was scheduled to return on October 23 after already being postponed a month), but NBC has opted to cancel the series.
Starring an ensemble cast including Benjamin McKenzie (Yikes...that's 2 OC alums whose new series have seen quick deaths, as Mischa Barton's The Beautiful Life was just axed 2 weeks ago), Southland debuted last spring in ER's old time slot with solid reviews and pretty strong ratings, though they declined as the season progressed.
7 episodes aired last Spring; 6 have been produced for the 2nd season thus far and it is unclear if/when the network will air them.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
"While Southland has enjoyed strong support among NBC brass, after screening the finished episodes from the upcoming second season, the show's content was deemed too dark and gritty for broadcast TV, especially for 9 p.m.
There is a possibility for the series starring Ben McKenzie to be shopped to cable networks."
Translation: NBC knows that nobody will watch this show on a Friday at 9 and they have nowhere else to put it on their schedule.
Upset about this cancellation? Holding out hope for a cable pickup?

NBC has some issues. They always cancel good shows and keep on the really bad ones.
I don't see Southland as any big loss but ; does anyone at NBC know what they are doing? They KNEW the 10pm timeslot was going to Leno. Why the hell did they renew it if they didn't want it for 9pm? Does anyone at NBC have any sense at all?
They really don't seem to have any sort of long term plans, they just pickup/cancel shows at random.
Gutted. Really enjoyed Southland.

i would actually rather see it on cable.. thats where all the best shows are now a days. im getting so tried of network shows, just so boring and unoriginal. This show could really push boundaries if it were on cable.

NBC really seems to be sinking... do they ever win a night anymore? Thursday seems to be their only saving grace with Office, and 30rock, but they they're really sucking.
Are you kidding me! What the hell is wrong with this network. Too dark? Every other Wednesday, L&O SVU has a dead baby inside of cooler. How is that not darker? Can someone seriously just cancel NBC. Such a freaking waste of a TV channel.
i can't belive this is happening i love that show!!! and if it get's darker i just say bring it on! show are too PG these days...
I'm really disappointed. Southland was one of those surprises on network television that had me saying out loud, "wow, good for you NBC!" I guess that was premature.

when is nbc going to stop this jay leno madness and cancel him and put the good drama back on that had them on the top oh not so long ago.
