Announcing SideReel Playlists

| loading

New feature alert! SideReel now has Playlists!

Ever have trouble trying to figure out what to watch next? Can't remember where you were in your favorite show? Let SideReel help you make sense of the madness with Playlists.

On every show page (check out the return of 30 Rock), in the episode guide, you can now click Add to Playlist to add an episode to the playlist on your profile page by clicking the 'My Profile' tab.

This is just the first step in playlists for us. In true SideReel fashion we wanted to get something out for you to use (and give us feedback on) before we went too much further. Check it out and let us know what you think in this thread or by e-mail feedback@sidereel.com

Upcoming changes to Playlists are:

- Automatically add new episodes of your favorite shows to your Playlist as they air;

- Add an entire season or episode of a show;

- Better UI around Playlists; and

- Suggestions by you!

I cant wait until it automatically updates. Sometimes I have a hard time remembering the last time i watched a show. Excellent idea Sidereel!

Yay! I am super excited to try this. I was just thinking that it'd be nice to have some sort of reminder as to what I have and haven't watched. Thanks for reading my mind!

I was expecting the Playlists to be a feature only for the ppl living in the USA just like the Episodetracker was. I don't live in the USA so I can't watch on Hulu amazon etc. I have to look for the extended links. Is there any chance we will be able to add episodes from the search results to our Playlists? I know your main concern are the Users of the USA but maybe you will do us "Abroadies" a favor, too? ;)

Any chance we'll ever see the ability to filter the link results for episodes? I don't use megavideo (because of the time limit) and there's usually 10-30 links from them. I also don't use hulu, fancast, etc, any of the USA only links as I am Canadian.

The ability to filter these out would be great!

ok a little confused dont we alreay have a playlist on our page i have asked this before but is there any way of letting us know of any new shows as i dont always check through the whole of sidereel

  6. sinistersimian Send a Compliment - 11:31 PDT, 16 October, 2009

@TheRani1981 - This feature will be for everybody, you'll be able to add any episode of any show to your playlist. Then you can click to choose which video source you want to use from your playlist.

@Chaendar - That's a really great idea and one we've got kicking around. Hopefully we'll be able to get to it soon.

@guardianofhell - There will be a way to have new episodes automatically added to your playlist! We'll also be working on better ways to tell you when new shows start airing. Stay tuned!

yeah sounds good to me but can we update what episodes we watched via external limks directly through the playlist

  8. sinistersimian Send a Compliment - 13:44 PDT, 16 October, 2009

@ebarello - You sure can. Just remove it from the playlist. Soon we'll have a button labeled 'I've watched this' that will remove it from your playlist and add it to your watching history. Would that help?

@sinistersimian thanks for heads up on that oh ye just to say sidereel is looking awesome as always

Thats great news sinistersimian!! Thanks a lot I really appreciate it!

Btw a while ago when u had this survey I did ask if it's possible to make an "Next Episode Button" on the search results site so we don't have to go back to the main site..I guess the playlist is going to make such a Button dispensable?

I don't know how to thank you for all you are doing just to please us!

Nice Idea, but I was already using site reel in a similar fashion.

In the previous version of my profile I use to have a list of my favorites, with the last watched episode, and a link for the next one.

You've remove that list and now I have to update by hand every episode, I hope this become more automatic, or at least keep the old version available.

    Thanks

It would also be nice to have a direct link on your schedule to add episodes to the playlist, rather than having to go to each show one by one. Thanks.

@Chaendar completely agree, as a Canadian and heavy TV watcher, this is becoming annoying to deal with.

  13. Yetade Yetade Send a Compliment - 8:14 PDT, 17 October, 2009

Brilliant idea....will be great as long as the episode tracker is integrated into it, or something similar because at the moment I have to go through my recent activity to find out the last episode I watched!

  14. del3ooni del3ooni Send a Compliment - 13:40 PDT, 17 October, 2009

I really miss the old version you had, it was easier to navigate, and there was no need to go into each one individually to update the episode i had watched.

I have tried using the playlist feature but don't like it at all, is there any way i can get the old version back again, it's so much better.

  15. ebarello ebarello Send a Compliment - 13:43 PDT, 17 October, 2009

@sinistersimian first of i'd like to say you have a great site going here !!! My questions or advice go out in an effort to help you make things better .... I tried removing the episodes from the playlist bbut it doesn't update the episode i watched on the series page :(. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

BTW i watch the episodes via external links maybe the problem comes from there... I don't know.

Hey I have a suggestion : what if you also add a feature that automatically adds episodes from the favorites to the playlist that haven't been watched by the user that way you have both the refresh of the episode when you remove it but the user also has the possibility to know what he/she still has pending !! .

  16. karlym karlym Send a Compliment - 21:41 PDT, 17 October, 2009

There needs to be an indicator that there is a newer episode.

The next episode should be listed when it is posted (like the updater did on the old format) but NOT until it is posted. That way we know when it is available to watch, not just which one will be next.

  17. gogogo gogogo Send a Compliment - 3:01 PDT, 18 October, 2009

Completely agreed with the last comment by karlym.

You have completely messed what a customized playlist feature is supposed to do. Look at how www.tvcountdown.com works.

We just need a (one) place where we can see if there is a new episode for the TV shows that we added to the favorites. And that page is to show an update for a given TV show ONLY when a NEW episode has aired and I haven't watched it yet (that's why there is the "Last Viewed" selection dropdown).

Regards and I hope that you think over those suggestions. Also, in the meantime - it wouldn't hurt if you still run the old playlist interface on a separate page for those who don't want the new one.

  18. janx janx Send a Compliment - 6:10 PDT, 18 October, 2009

just please don't make it something that only works in the us, so don't make it like only hulu etc...

  19. sinistersimian Send a Compliment - 9:15 PDT, 18 October, 2009

    Hi everybody!

@ebarello - Great suggestion, we'll totally put that on the list.

@karlym - We're absolutely planning to do all sorts of things to help tell folks when new episodes are available.

@gogogo - Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely check out the site. We're planning to continue to roll out updates and changes to Playlists over the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Thanks so much for all the great feedback, keep it coming!

"Ever have trouble trying to figure out what to watch next? Can't remember where you were in your favorite show? " - well no, not until episode tracker disappeared at least :[

Please bring it back! I have to go find which episode I'm up to for each individual programme. go to the programme page and manually hit "add to playlist" - it's so tedious!

Why isn't this integrated with your favourites like the old tool? I favourite stuff because I want to see it, so it should be there in my playlist automatically, right?

    Bring back episode tracker please!

    Otherwise, great site.

How do I watch a freaking "playlist"?! This is ignorant!

  30. commie_stooge Send a Compliment - 18:39 PDT, 26 October, 2009

@sinisterman That's all well and good, however I note with interest that your profile seems to indicate you aren't embracing this feature yourself... A good tip with promoting is to always at least appear to use the product you're pushing!

  31. sinistersimian Send a Compliment - 21:49 PDT, 26 October, 2009

@commie_stooge - That's a great point. Sadly I'm all caught up on my shows so I don't have anything for me to watch. That'll change soon though, Sons of Anarchy comes on tomorrow and that's going in my playlist for sure. I definitely use SideReel and playlists, it's how I kept my place in Fringe when I was catching up on it. Thanks for the feedback!

Soon new episodes of the shows you follow will automatically appear in playlists so you don't have to go manually add them!

  32. olliecoise olliecoise Send a Compliment - 6:36 PDT, 28 October, 2009

is there anyway you could do the playlists similar to the old style tabs to keep track of what episodes i have watched

    thanks

  33. RandallFamily RandallFamily Send a Compliment - 12:50 PDT, 28 October, 2009

On Profile, instead of Alphabetical list of shows... it would be nice if we could organize the list ourselves, so that we have our favorite shows on top.

how the #$%^# do i work this thing?

  35. sinistersimian Send a Compliment - 15:29 PDT, 28 October, 2009

@RandallFamily - Great idea! I'll add it to the list!

@beautyontheroad - Just go to your favorite shows and click '+Playlist' to add episodes of your shows. Then use the 'My Profile' tab to keep up-to-date!

It's still in a rough form. Playlist subscriptions should be released tomorrow to automatically add new episodes of your favorites as they air!

  36. nes0 Send a Compliment - 16:05 PDT, 28 October, 2009

I loved the new playlist feautre, i was sceptical at first, but i remember before it we didnt have the other lists either, and i was sceptical to those too, but i got used to them.. but it anoyed me when it said that there were like episode 10 when the show had only aired epiosode 6 or smtn.. and that cant happpen here :D so thats great. And i agree to padmanango's suggestion, i liked the way the favorites where organized before..

And i just wanna say to people that they should read the comments, and stop posting the same thing over again (the thing about new episodes updating themselves).

  37. MarkK4 Send a Compliment - 19:45 PDT, 28 October, 2009
