Actor David Tennant is to put down his sonic screwdriver and quit his role as Britain's best-known time traveler "Doctor Who," the BBC said on Thursday.
Tennant, who took over the controls of the Tardis in 2005, will stay on as the Doctor in the special editions of the show in 2009 before a replacement takes over for the fifth new series of the cult science fiction show, the BBC said.
He will also appear in a Christmas special later this year.

That is terrible, I loved the show more when he came on. He gave it so much energy & humor to the role than the first season. I really hope he reconsiders this or at least make a few guest appearances on other series as well as the Doctor.
Please David stay!!!!!!! We need you badly. This show will not be the same without David Tennant. First I miss all my Stargate SG1 shows and now Sci-Fi is taking away Stargate Atlantis. What am I going to watch. Only the British knows how to make a good Sci-fi series.
I have David Tennant as the Doctor and would have liked him to have stayed on for an extra season as well as just the four specials in 2009 so that we could see a bit more of him. However, i don't blame him for wanting to go and it will be interesting to see what the new doctor will be like. it won't be the same but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be bad.
I think it's good that there will be a change. Then again, Tennant never quite grew on me. When compared to the first Doctor, he was childish, rather than anciently eccentric. Certainly he never managed to beat Christopher Eccleston's soulful looks and the feeling that the hyperness only hid tragedy. I could believe that Eccleston was nearly immortal, even if he didn't have much to offer the fangirls as eye-candy.
In any case, I'll be slightly sad to see Tennant gone (he's been around for a while), but I'm happily looking forward to seeing the new Doctor.
I agree with uncommitted. He never quite grew on me either, although I was a big rose and David-Doctor Fan.
I was quite raving when they first introduced Tenant as the new doctor because I was such an Eccleston Addict.
But, lets not overdo the praisng and hating, the journey will go on and with a new doctor there is a new chance of bringing in the perfect companion for him.
