It was called Cloverfield because Manhattan was bombed and the mushroom cloud that ensued is shaped like a clover, hence Cloverfield (field = Central Park)

Actually, you're wrong. It's called Cloverfield because the Bad Robot offices - the offices of the company that made this film - were situated in Cloverfield Boulevard while the film was being made.
