Series is about a neurologist (Kelly Reilly) who's hiding her own bipolar disorder.
After undergoing treatment in rehab, Catherine returns to face the fallout at home and at The Cube. While trying to get her life back on track, Esme’s biological father arrives and is in desperate need of a transplant. Catherine is faced with the difficult decision of having to reveal the truth to Esme about who her real parents are. Owen is agreeable to having Catherine back at work, though it isn’t without strict parameters, making it a challenge for Catherine to earn her credibility back, in “Black Box,”.
Catherine is experiencing hallucinations and refuses Dr. Hartramph’s urging to be admitted into a hospital. Her behavior is becoming increasingly manic and it isn’t long before Mahmoud begins to piece together what she’s seeing. Meanwhile, Bickman is reluctant to go back into the operating room after Joey’s botched surgery. Catherine encourages Bickman to see Lina so that she can re-wire his brain. A woman confronts a knife-wielding man on the street and the team wonders if it’s really a display of bravery or if she has an absence of fear.
I was unsure to start with if this was going to be to my liking. I have personal experience with what bipolar is and get annoyed when mental illness is portrayed as either the reason for someone being "special" or "brilliant" or when it is portrayed as making people victims. However, Catherine's illness (the main character) in Black Box is interwoven with an interesting storyline in its own right. Her psychotic, manic, paranoid, depressive, hypersexual behaviour is all typical of bipolar. It may seem to some people that it is over played, but it is very accurately shown in my opinion. She is a brilliant neurologist not because she is mentally ill but despite her daily struggle with her illness. The emotional turmoil that her ongoing decisions bring to her are insightful and interesting to watch. I hope that this show is renewed and that we can see more of how her character and the people she interacts with on a daily basis.
