The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of April 18, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   The Night Manager (Series Premiere) Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. on AMC Why: A huge hit already in the U.K., this critically acclaimed miniseries finally debuts on AMC with high expectations. Based on John le Carré's 1993 novel, the TV adaptation stars a downright Bondian Tom Hiddleston as a former British soldier who infiltrates the inner circle of an arms dealer played by Hugh Laurie. Executive producer Stephen Garrett described it as "the thriller equivalent of a bromance." Think Bond meets Bourne, with a dash of Tom Ripley. Getting The Night Manager to the screen has been a struggle, in part because the traditional film format doesn't make sense for a story so vast. Once again, TV provides what film can't: in this case, the space to tell the story right. And it's a good one. Prepare to talk about: Hiddleston's impending ascent to the A-list; Laurie's total ownership of the gentlemanly villain archetype; another top-notch performance from the underappreciated Olivia Colman.   Inside Amy Schumer (Season Premiere) Thursday at 10:00 p.m. on Comedy Central Why: Sure, she's got a hit movie on her resume, a couple more in the works, a time-consuming (but sooo fun) best friendship with Jennifer Lawrence, regular confabs with feminist icons like Gloria Steinem, and much more going on. But Amy Schumer continues to make her Emmy-winning Comedy Central show, now in its fourth season, a priority. And as the pressure to deliver has mounted, the quality of the show has increased. It's smart, it's thoughtful, it's unabashedly feminist. But most importantly, it's funny as hell. Part of her appeal lies in her everywoman understanding of how media works, how overexposed stars become, and how quick audiences are to set fire to the altars they've just finished building for celebrities. Schumer knows this is all insane, which just adds to her appeal. Prepare to talk about: Whether we're here for the sister Schumer keeps trying to make us embrace; another too-real song parody about relationships.   Game of Thrones (Season Premiere) Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO Why: "Jon Snow is dead." That's how this episode's official HBO summary begins. But the title of the episode is "The Red Woman." So it's not too much of a stretch to assume that Melisandre brings everyone's favorite bastard back to life — or at least a form that will enable Kit Harington to grace our screens for a little while longer. The network has really dialed up the secrecy surrounding the Snow plot, refusing to release episodes to the press before the premiere (although they did make their way to the Oval Office ). But the cast has been more loose-lipped about some other Season 6 developments, including a more vengeful Sansa and an "all-time weird level" for the Cersei-Jaime relationship. Forget Snow; that's truly something to be worried about. Prepare to talk about: Whether this season is a little less... rapey; all the tortures and terrors awaiting your faves (Ramsay Bolton first, please).   T.J. DeGroat is the editor of SideReel.
