Last Resort Creators Promise More Than Bombs and Submarines

ABC's Last Resort is undoubtedly one of this TV season's boldest shows. But that also makes it one of the riskiest.  Co-created by The Shield 's Shawn Ryan and screenwriter Karl Gajdusek , Last Resort tells the story of Marcus Chaplin ( Andre Braugher ), the captain of the nuclear submarine the USS Colorado. When Chaplin and his executive officer Sam Kendal ( Scott Speedman ) question an order to fire warheads into Pakistan, their sub is fired upon by another American vessel, forcing them to take up residence on the French Polynesian island of Sainte Marina until they can piece together what happened and prove that they aren't traitors. 'Last Resort's' Daisy Betts: How she kept 'dummies' out of Hawaii and 10 more things to know

"Last Resort," the new political thriller premiering tonight (Sept. 27) on ABC, Daisy Betts plays plucky Grace Shepard, lieutenant and chief navigator of the nuclear submarine Colorado. Grace has to contend with hostility not only from her own enlisted men but from the country she's sworn to serve, after her captain (Andre Braugher) disobeys a direct order and the sub is attacked. Betts, an Australian native and relative newcomer to U.S. TV, is a standout in "Last Resort's" strong (and sexy) ensemble cast, and one of Zap2it's Ones to Watch for the 2012-13 season. We guarantee you'll learn much more about Betts soon, but we asked the important questions. Read on for all her answers, direct from the Hawaii set of "Last Resort"... What's the most embarrassing song is on your iPod? "Under the Sea" from "The Little Mermaid" -- always loved that song. I have met others like me... Zombie apocalypse or alien...

'Last Resort's' Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman: 'We are essentially blameless'

Take a heaping helping of nuclear tension from "Crimson Tide," throw in a dash of Col. Kurtz's heart of darkness from "Apocalypse Now," and shake on some island flavor, a la "Mutiny on the Bounty," and you've got an approximation of "Last Resort," premiering Thursday, Sept. 27, on ABC.Created by Shawn Ryan ("The Unit," "The Shield") and Karl Gajdusek ("Dead Like Me"), the high-octane drama focuses on the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado, commanded by Capt. Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher). While submerged, the Colorado receives orders to launch nuclear weapons at Pakistan, over a channel to be used only if the U.S. has been decimated. Suspicious of how the orders were received, Chaplin requests confirmation, only to have the White House unceremoniously relieve him of command. His second-in-command, Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman), also refuses to launch missiles without confirmation, and suddenly the Colorado finds itself under friendly fire. With the sub declared rogue and its crew designated...

'Last Resort': Interview with Creators Shawn Ryan and Karl Gadjusek

Last Resort 's creators and executive producers, Karl Gadjusek and Shawn Ryan, spoke with reporters last week about their new fall show. Last Resort  premieres on Thursday, September 27th at 8 pm ET on ABC.

Last Resort Sneak Peeks: Scott Speedman and Andre Braugher Battle the Government in a Sub

Shawn Ryan, the showrunner behind The Shield and The Chicago Code, has come to ABC with Last Resort , a stellar drama about the crew of a submarine who are betrayed by their government and forced to take shelter on an island paradise. Andre Braugher stars as Marcus Chaplin, the captain of the ballistic missible Submarine "Colorado".  While on a routine mission, Marcus is shocked to receive an order for the sub to bomb Pakistan.  While the order comes over a special communications channel that is only to be used if the U.S. is attacked, Marcus is wary of carrying it out.  When he asks for further confirmation, he's dismissed as captain.  His XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) is promoted and given the same orders.  When he too asks for further confirmation, the sub is fired upon. Nearly crippled on the ocean floor, the Marcus, Sam and the crew need to find a way to survive being destroyed by members of their own government.  The sub goes on the run and eventually surfaces on an exotic island.  Demanding that they be left alone from further retaliation - or they'll fire their nuclear weapons - they're determined to find a way to clear their names. Don't miss the series premiere of Last Resort on Thursday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

'Last Resort' bosses Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek: 'We have the sexiest cast on TV'

"Last Resort's" intriguing, explosive and high-stakes submarine thriller premieres next week (Sept. 27). In addition to being a roller-coaster thrill ride, it features a huge, really good-looking ensemble cast -- including Andre Braugher's rogue submarine captain, his crew (why hello, Scott Speedman !) and the inhabitants of the island where they become stranded. But don't let the tropical setting fool you into thinking this is another "Lost." Co-creator Shawn Ryan (best known for his gritty, critically acclaimed cop drama "The Shield") acknowledges that "some similarities [to "Lost"] can't be avoided -- namely, a group of people on an island who would like to be home." "[But] 'Lost was a mystery wrapped in an enigma," adds co-creator Karl Gajdusek. "We have some great mysteries on our show [like a top-level government conspiracy], but I could flat-out tell the audience the truth and it would not diminish our show one iota." "If there is a similarity," muses...
