Finding another confessor should be a positive thing for Richard Cypher and his friends, but Annabelle turns out to be nothing but trouble, particularly for Kahlan.
It is somewhat surprising to see well-known American actresses on Legend of the Seeker, first with Charisma Carpenter in the season premiere, and now in "Touched" we have Aimee Teegarden from Friday Night Lights. As she does on that show, Teegarden plays a teenager who is learning the tough lessons of growing up, although here there is the added element that she is a Confessor with important responsibilities and the power to enslave others with a touch. Annabelle is an out-of-control, whiny, naive young woman who has been sheltered from the world and imprisoned by a father who did not want to unleash another Confessor on the world. Teegarden is a great choice for this role as she is able to keep Annabelle at least a little bit sympathetic, even as she does some really bad things, such as confessing Richard.
As soon as the previews showed that Richard would be confessed, it seemed obvious that Annabelle would have to die. However, a convenient way out of that predicament presents itself while at the same time giving the show another chance to have Richard and Kahlan possibly consummate their relationship. Since Richard has been confessed by someone else, he can be with Kahlan without being in danger of being confessed by her. This situation is certainly very creepy, since Richard is not under his own power anymore. I can't imagine that if the roles had been reversed and Kahlan had been under someone else's control that it would have even been suggested that she have sex with anyone, including Richard. However, the show takes every opportunity to increase the sexual tension between Kahlan and Richard, without ever actually letting them give in to their desires.
