Secret Life: You Are My Everything

So we're 2 episodes into The Secret Life of The American Teenager and I already have some bold predictions for the show's future, but I'll get to those in a moment.

In this week's episode, titled "You Are My Everything", word spreads around the school that Amy and Ricky had sex (thanks to Amy's rather indiscreet friends, among other people). Word reaches Ben and he feels threatened/hurt. Also, Amy attempts to ignore/forget the fact that she's pregnant, but her morning sickness makes this difficult...

Things I liked:

-Ben is sooooo awkward; awkward to the point that it's really really painful to watch. His "I heard you "dated" Ricky voicemail? Ouch. Telling Amy he loved her after a single date? Cringeworthy! That being said, this is probably the most accurate portrayal of a 9th grade boy that I have seen in a awhile. Ninth grade boys are supremely awkward, so I liked that the show is seeming to embrace this. Also, does anybody else see "young Adam Brody" in Kenny Baumann (who plays Ben)?

-Ben's friends; they seem wittier and generally more entertaining than Amy's friends.

-I'm enjoying Daren Kagasoff's performance as "too-cool-for-school yet tortured on the inside foster child" Ricky.

Things I didn't like:

-Adrian's sluttiness is just...overdone. Zipping up Jack's pants in the middle of the hallway? Prancing around in a robe, throwing herself at Ricky? It's too much.

-Amy's father, when talking to his wife, referred to women as "chicks". Enough said.

-Grace's parents (and father in particular), are disturbingly, creepily, meddlesome.

-Is anybody ever as forthcoming with their high school guidance counselor as Ben seems to be?

What?:

-"Grace's mom is my dad's ex-wife." - Amy

I had to rewind and listen to this twice because it was so casually thrown in there. I wonder where they are going with this one.

-Amy's goth sister is...younger than her?! She sure doesn't look like it...

And now...my fearless predictions for the future of this show:

Amy will have a miscarriage.

Here's my thinking: The show is not going to tackle the abortion issue. I'm pretty sure they won't even say the word. However, I also just don't see the show progressing as "Amy walks around visibly pregnant as Ben continues to fall in love with her." In a world that is remotely realistic, do you honestly see that as a possibility (someone in the 9th grade willing to continue to date someone that is pregnant with another person's baby)? Call me a pessimist, but I just don't. Granted, she could also end up with Ricky (and they could raise their child together, like these two), but based on the first two episodes, I get the sense that in the end Amy and Ben will end up together.

Furthermore, the title of the show is "The Secret Life of The American Teenager." The word baby is nowhere in the title - nowhere is it etched in stone that Amy must end up with a child in tow (except that in the promotional photos she looks reasonably pregnant - but that could just be a red herring - i.e. intentionally misleading). Even if Amy ultimately doesn't have a child, the show will still have plenty of material to address, and they can still pat themselves on the back for responsibly covering the issue and repercussions of teen pregnancy.

Just a thought. I obviously could be completely wrong. Only time will tell (and as we learned in an interview, the show is going to move at a very slow pace, so this could also be 2 seasons down the line).

In the meantime, looks like next week Amy's "younger sister" will be finding out about the baby, which should be interesting...

i think that amy SHOULD end up with Ricky somehow because it IS HIS BABAY and deep down i think he is a really sweet guy. Ben is nice too but he'd not really amy's type. I hope that amy and Ricky end up together! I bet alot more people will watch it too because Ricky is so cute!!! and Adrian and him should definatly break up without a doubt!!!

Ahh, see, I am completely against her and Ricky. I think someone like Grace would be good for Ricky. She has a loving family, and I think they would embrace him if they think he's a good guy. And, she can show him a moral side of things (and he can spice her up a bit!!)
As for Adriana, I have to agree. She is way too sexual for me! But, it seems like that's the only way she knows to get male attention. I bet we find out a lot more about her character in later episodes. Where were her parents in this last one? I must've missed it if they said.

Kenny Baumann totally reminds me of Adam Brody, so true! He's in love with her after one single date? That's the problem with this show, there are things that are moving to fast and other too slowly, I mean, what is Amy waiting for? have sex with Ben! I'm really interested in Ricky's plan in the third episode, looking forward to see what is up to...the little mistery I hope it will stay till episode 10..and that's another topic...10 episodes?it's too short isn't it?

I agree that Adriana is way overly slutty-not very realist though sadly, not thattttt far off. As for amy having a miscarrige -theres nnoooooooooooo way, if you think of it from the producers point of view, that would end the show so quickly, becuase it would then become just like any other show for teenagers, and the thing setting this show apart is everyones secrets, namley amys. If amys baby dies, there's no plot line, so that is not going to happen. Thanks for the thoughts on that though :)
